Committee OKs end to door-slot mail for millions

WASHINGTON (AP) — Millions of Americans would no longer get mail delivered to their door but would have to go to communal or curbside boxes instead under a proposal advancing through Congress.

The Republican-controlled House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, on an 18-13 party-line vote, approved a bill Wednesday to direct the U.S. Postal Service to convert 15 million addresses over the next decade to the less costly, but also less convenient delivery method.

Democrats objected to the plan, and efforts in recent years to win its adoption have failed.

"I think it's a lousy idea," Rep. Stephen Lynch, D-Mass., said. Other lawmakers said it wouldn't work in urban areas where there's no place on city streets to put banks of "cluster boxes" with separate compartments for each address. People with disabilities who have difficulty leaving their homes could get waivers, and people who still want delivery to their door could pay extra for it — something Lynch derided as "a delivery tax."

Hey, here's an idea...instead of making the Postal service pay into a pre-funding slush fund thru 9-2016, just back the hell off and leve the USPS alone. Not one cent of Tax Monies ever...EVER goes to the Postal Service, yes Issa and his pack of weasels wants to snatch the $50 BILLION pre-funded fund that now exists. It's privatization of something that should be sacrosanct...Oh yeah, 1.3 MILIION good paying middle class jobs hang in the balance.

This is behind every move the republicans have made to further cripple the Postal Service.

I like the idea of using post offices to do simple banking transactions and allow people to have savings accounts.

they are trying to throw any and all roadbloacks at the USPS in order to make it fail.....and the point isn't to increase efficiency....its to make it fail.

We still have a Postal Service that is the envy of the world......and they want it not to be....because Fedex and UPS want the ability to control that market and the price you will pay to ship....the ability to shake you down....
