When someone thanks me for my service, it kind of feels like stolen valor because I'm alive and kicking.
Any other day of the year I'm just fine with it. But on Memorial day, I find myself biting my tongue and muttering thanks because I think their hearts are in the right place.
Thanks for letting me vent.

(26,449 posts)I was a submariner during the cold war. Never saw a hot war.
But to know that someone with a bronze star has similar feelings helps a bit.
Thanks for the reply!

(1,370 posts)I never saw combat...I am proud of my service and thought it was important, but certainly nothing that rises to the importance of what Memorial Day is about.
Veteran's Day is similar for me. People always ask me if I went to a local restaurant to get a free meal (the same place does it every year). They almost prod me to go - but there's a huge line, of actual combat veterans...I would feel almost silly going.
I'm not trying to diminish the service of all veterans. But I understand the feeling of being somewhat squeamish, when somebody thanks me for my service on these holidays.

(26,449 posts)I was in during the cold war after VN. My job wouldn't have changed any if things had turned hot, well, until the missiles were away.
