Jon Stewart and The Public's Apathy Over Gun Violence

Source: Huff Po

Why do we keep having mass shootings? What can be done about it? Jon Stewart says too many have decided it doesn't matter any more -- that it's going to keep happening and there's nothing we can do about it.

We've reached the acceptance stage, he said on Monday's broadcast of "The Daily Show."

"It's like America has a dog that's always shitting inside the house, and we solved the problem by getting a brown rug," Stewart said.

But he does want to help the "real victims" of the violence: the news media "who are still going to have to waste valuable time going through the motions of covering these inevitable clearly unstoppable everyday ordinary soul-destroying slaughters."

We can do something. It is called elections and until we get a congress that is strong enough to stand up to money and has the moral backbone to make true changes to campaign finance law these shootings will continue to happen on a monthly basis. Elections have consequences and in states like Maine, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Florida the people have discovered what happens when you stay at home during the off election years. if we stay home this fall I truly fear what will happen over the next few years.

I am terrified at what will come if we don't get out the vote. Unfortunately I am beginning to think the only cure is to term limit everyone to whatever term they are currently in. Get rid of everyone, have a new national election without all the money and start anew. Whatever happens can't be any worse that what will happen if the repugs get control of congress...

Our foul governor, John Kasich, thinks he is going to be the next POTUS, because his corporate owners tell him he will be so long as he makes sure they are given as much of Ohioans' tax money as he can get to them. Then add in the completely contemptible Republicans who control the Ohio House and Senate. There is not a day goes by they are in session they are not passing some law to give away money to corporations, show their hatred of women and people of color, and the poor, while passing ALEC legislation verbatim and privatizing public functions. These people are the worst of the worst as far as lining their own pockets and their corporate owners.

The Democratic Party acted as if the election of 2010 did not have any consequences and completely failed to get out the vote in Ohio. Our state resources are being ruined or stolen from us every day, since 2010. Unfortunately, it appears, so far, the GOP will easily win re-election in this state and the national Democratic Party has abandoned Ohio citizens to these parasites! GOTV is the answer, but we need some well organized support to get people to vote. So many people here are so traumatized by their economic circumstances, they do not understand who is really to blame for their predicaments. The right wing propaganda machine here is in full swing and people are inundated from every media outlet and from their church pulpits to vote against their own interests or just stay home.

I couldn't remember all of the States that elected a GOP Governor in 2010 but you are correct and I hope what you are saying doesn't happen.

Not really. You can either vote for the candidate who supports the gun lobby, or vote for the candidate afraid to oppose the gun lobby. Take yer pick.
