White Plains Mayor Apologizes for Police Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain
The mayor of White Plains, New York, has finally apologized to the family of a 68-year-old veteran fatally shot by police in his own home. Kenneth Chamberlain, an African-American former Marine, was killed after police responded to a false alert from his medical pendant. The officers broke down Chamberlains door, tasered him, and then shot him dead. That was on November 19th. On Friday more than four months later White Plains mayor Tom Roach issued a statement offering "condolences" to Chamberlains family. The move came one day after Chamberlains son, Kenneth Chamberlain, Jr., publicly criticized Roach and other city officials for staying silent about the case for so long. Chamberlains killing is expected to go before a grand jury in the coming weeks.

(16,327 posts)How about a total overhaul of how such calls are handled? How about strengthened officer education?
Good lord, just a few months ago I watched the SFPD handle a wildly paranoid, totally out of control crack addict who was running naked around my intersection. No taser. No gun. Just some time and some smarts.
How the fuck hard is it to take some time and check out a scene before you start blazing???
What happened to this man is criminal.

I hope it got the family some good support in their fight with White Plains.

(163,986 posts)The other night I was trying to follow up on a story posted in Good Reads re Dante Price who was shoot by security guards at his young son's apartment complex. I went looking for his picture and tried searching "justice for Dante" and up pops yet another story about some other young man named "Dante" who was tried hastily and is now in prison doing 20+ years for a crime he probably didn't even commit. At least they didn't kill him, too.
