What would a discussion about the shooting death of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin by 28-year-old non-black George Zimmerman be without a contribution from Patrick J. Buchanan?
<...>
Wrote Mr. Buchanan: "The real America is a country where the black crime rate is seven times as high as the white rate where white criminals choose black victims in 3 percent of their crimes, but black criminals choose white victims in 45 percent of their crimes." And he goes on like this, citing statistics that point to disproportionately larger numbers of blacks and Hispanics tied to gun assaults.
All of which is irrelevant to the nationwide protests in the wake of Trayvon Martin's death.
It is the absence of justice in this case that strikes the nerve of so many Americans. Yes, there is black-on-black crime. More blacks fall victim to black criminals than whites. But what sets those black perps apart from the man who shot Trayvon Martin is that those offenders are pursued by the criminal justice system. Most of them end up in jail or on probation and with criminal records.

(50,557 posts)it was okay for Zimmerman to kill Martin because not enough white people are killing black people?

(27,677 posts)maybe you just distort things when you're pwned.
Buchanan is trying to bring us back to reality. One thing he noted, which I found very interesting (in light of the accusation of GZ's alleged "racism" is that he asks whether GZ would have followed a BLACK WOMAN the way he did Trayvon. Given the stats of who is committing crime, this makes total sense.

(12,287 posts)but I think if Zimmermann had been black, Trayvon's parents STILL would have wanted it investigated and justice served.

(20,846 posts)isn't apparently a crime. If we examined corporate crime the same way we profile the minority poor, I wonder what the crime rate would look like.
The point is whether his stats are true, not whether you can call him names. I'm not sure they are true, but what I'll do is look them up. And understand what he's saying, the police are not making the stuff up or targeting minorities, which is why he's including the cab guy. I've read other stats in liberal places like The NY times that give 90 percent of all murders and 96 percent of all shootings being caused by minorities in Nyc. DO some research.

(19,768 posts)The point is that Pat's bigotry is irrelevant here. This isn't about whether or not Zimmerman was justified in shooting Martin because X% of murders this or Y% of shootings that. The point is that an unarmed teenager was gunned down and that "left to their own devices, officials were going to let George Zimmerman merrily get on with his life."
Are you really suggesting that the shooting was justified if "I DO some research" that shows Pat's numbers to be true? That Martin deserved to be shot because he was black?
