Proposition 5, the latest effort in Anchorage to extend equal-rights protections to people on grounds of sexual orientation and transgendered identity, was narrowly failing at the polls Tuesday night by 54.98 percent to 45.02 percent, with about 53 percent of precincts reporting.

Proposition 5 represents backers’ latest effort to enact language in city code that would protect people from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and transgendered identity. A previous effort in 2009 passed the Anchorage Assembly after weeks of emotional testimony, but was vetoed by Mayor Dan Sullivan -- who was attacked for that veto by challenger Paul Honeman during this year’s mayoral race, but won re-election by a comfortable margin.
