Read today that a judge threw out the City's attempt to ban guns inside the Republican Convention and a nearby protest area. So now it's possible that all the delegates could be "packing"! Those Tea Party folks will be mad as hell, so let's hope the convention doesn't produce a tragedy.

(17,064 posts)Guns are banned in the Convention Center and small security zone immediately outside. Otherwise, guns are permitted in the downtown area. Squirt guns, aerosol cans, silly string, etc are all banned from downtown area, also banned are masks or anything that can be used to make a makeshift gasmask. Dont know how thats gonna work.

(1,682 posts)A judge did not throw out the city's attempt to ban guns inside the Rupublican Conventions and a nearby protest area. Please go to this article from the Tampa Bay Times (formerly the St. Petersburg Times):
http://www.tampabay.com/news/localgovernment/permitted-concealed-firearms-would-be-allowed-in-gop-convention-protest/1223099
"TAMPA If Tampa's proposed rules for the Republican National Convention are passed, protesters could not bring squirt guns into a designated protest zone.
But they could bring real guns if they have concealed weapons permits. That's because state law does not allow local governments to enact laws regulating guns, City Attorney Jim Shimberg Jr. said. 'Even if we tried to regulate it, it would be null and void,' Shimberg said Monday.
The first draft of Tampa's proposed temporary ordinance laying out rules for the convention did include restrictions on guns inside the city's proposed "Clean Zone," which will cover all of downtown, including a designated protest area."
This is not due to a judge's order, but instead it is due to a state law. As you can see above, Tampa first wanted to ban them, but found out that state law would not allow that.
