Microsoft Presses: More Green Cards For India IT

inShare. Permalink Microsoft Presses: More Green Cards For India IT
Oracle, Google, Cisco, and Intel also push Senate to pass stalled legislation to end per-country caps on employment-based green cards.

Microsoft is calling on the Senate to pass stalled legislation that would put an end to per-country caps on employment-based green cards.
"Our current green card system is not up to the task, with highly valued professionals spending a decade or more mired in backlogs," said Microsoft general counsel Brad Smith in a blog post. "Government officials are warning that these backlogs will become even more severe next month, especially for individuals born in India and China."

Smith called on the Senate to pass the Fairness for High-Skilled Immigrants Act (H.R. 3012)), which sailed through the House of Representatives in November with a 389-15 vote. The act would make the 140,000 employment-based green cards that the U.S. issues each year available on a first come, first served basis. Currently, individuals from any one country can account for no more than 7% of the total work-related green cards issued.

"The Senate should act now and pass this important legislation," said Smith.

Oracle has a number of floors in the building in which I work. There are already tons of Indians working here. Again, there are no American citizens to do these jobs? Somehow I do not believe this is the case.

none of them were qualified

Immigration attorneys from Cohen & Grigsby explains how they assist employers in running classified ads with the goal of NOT finding any qualified applicants, and the steps they go through to disqualify even the most qualified Americans in order to secure green cards for H-1b workers.

US senator promises more L1, H1B visas for Indians

Amid Indian IT firms' concerns over restrictive US visa policies for their employees, a top American senator has assured that he is working on a bipartisan bill that will reform immigration laws and allow more Indians to come to America.

Influential US Senator from New York Chuck Schumer and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid met noted Indian-American hotelier and Chairman of Indian-American Democrats Sant Singh Chatwal at his Manhattan hotel here on Friday.

During the nearly hour-long meeting, the three discussed India-US bilateral relations and concerns of Indian IT firms on problems in obtaining work visas like H1B and L1 for their employees.

Here it's just the caps for each country. Does it matter whether these job stealers all come from one country or whether they are split up among different countries?

who have little hope of landing an IT job. When my husband was laid off two years ago, he quickly discovered that his only option was something government-related that required American citizenship. Even though he was more than qualified, Microsoft, HP, etc. wouldn't even talk to him. At one job fair in the SF Bay area, employers were only talking to H1-B green card holders. It's a disgrace.

the contractors can get around that pesky citizenship requirement.

My husband works in IT for a federal contractor. Many of his co-workers are H1-Bs. It's sickening.

I don't want our tax money spend to hire foreigners to take jobs that should go to American citizens.

OTOH, the per country caps are sort of stupid. Who cares what nationality the person is who steals your job? Do we feel better because in a few cases it may be a German rather than an Indian?

The point is immigrant to the United States. What difference does it make where they come from? Presumably those against "job stealing immigrants" don't want their jobs stolen by Europeans any more than Indians.

As long as we keep falling for it, they will keep doing it. They think we are so stupid that we will sit idly in front of the TV and let them kill the very concept of America. So far they are right.
