WASHINGTON -- It has been 16 years since Kathryn Lehman was a Republican Hill staffer working on the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the federal law that defines marriage as between one man and one woman. Now Lehman's back on Capitol Hill, in a new capacity: as a lesbian GOP lobbyist trying to repeal the law she helped write.
Things were pretty different in Lehman's world in 1996. She was engaged to a man. Same-sex marriage wasn't legal anywhere. And the public perception of what it meant to be gay wasn't anything like it is now, she says.
"There was nobody married, it wasnt allowed anywhere," Lehman recalls. "The view of gay people ... it wasn't Ellen [DeGeneres]. It wasn't Neil Patrick Harris. It was kinky sex and women riding around on motorcycles without shirts on. That was sort of the view that the community projected as well."

(82,849 posts)There's a part of me that's happy Ms. Lehman is working on behalf of all citizens, rather than just on the side of some citizens' bigotry. But there's also a part of me that would like to see a little penance done for her past sins, and her little self-justification about the "perception" of gay people in 1996 is evidence to me that some penance is indeed warranted. I don't know what form that might take, but I can't deny that feeling.

(4,876 posts)riding motorcycles with no shirt(holy shit, where do they come up with this stuff?) have proven to be false you have decided that you are completely on the other side of the issue.
Sorry, I for one would like her to get out of the way and make room for someone who doesn't base their ideology on lies and bullshit.
