Why should we care?
It wouldnt be unusual, says Eric Genden, chief of head and neck oncology at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. This is an epidemic.

We need better reproductive health education in our world. Sex positive is a good thing but we need better sex education. Talk to your children.

(14,971 posts)Traditionally, head and neck cancer patients were older men who smoke and drank heavily. The alcohol and tobacco damaged the cells in the throat, eventually leading to cancer.
HPV-caused cancer is different. The men (and its still mostly men) who get it are younger. In a series of cases at Mount Sinai, they were between 35 and 65.

This is really no laughing matter. Talking about sex in a positive out in the sunlight way is something we have to afford ourselves and our children.

And no, I have not. I suppose one advantage of being terminally single is a decreased risk of throat cancer.

(6,199 posts)That's how I read the title. I had to open the thread to see how one gets a state caught in their throat; you'd think if that was going to happen, it would be Florida. I'm kinda glad I didn't find out.

My dentist is all about checking for this type of cancer. He says he sees quite a bit - I forget the number he told me but it was alarming.

(22,655 posts)Dams for oral sex but I have never used one and No BJ without a condom? I'm concerned about all of the young women in our society (local middle school age) that are part of the "Technical Virgin" trend. Won't have "sex" this is intercourse, before marriage, cause duh 'religion' but... will engage in oral sex readily. On school grounds. This is an epidemic: not approaching reproductive health as a natural and necessary part of healthcare and wellness could kill us. Virus. Dead.

(26,326 posts)It turned out to be an over abundance of caution on my Dentist's part.
During a routine exam he paused and started investigating a spot on my tongue. And then he gave me the "I don't want to alarm you but..."
That was Thursday morning. He referred me to a surgeon and I was able to book an appointment first thing Monday.
I'd be a liar if I said I wasn't nervous. I did manage to spend the weekend out of town and resist the urge to google "oral cancer".
Then I made the mistake of logging on to DU Sunday night when I got back in to town.
By chance, I happened to run across an OP by beloved DUer AlienGirl. She posted an OP talking about why it's not cool to make fun of people with bad teeth because you never know the story behind their bad teeth. She then listed all the havoc cancer and radiation played on her mouth - starting with a spot on her tongue all the way through radiation destroying her teeth and jaw. Absolutely heartbreaking.
Sadly, AlienGirl has since passed from the disease.

(22,655 posts)It depends on the type. Here again we have evidence education is a weak link. We must talk about sex as if our lives depend on it.

(2,063 posts)He was a severe alcoholic and a chainsmoker however. I don't know if he had HPV.
In June last year, he had what he thought was a bad case of bronchitis and went to the ER. When the initial visit didn't provide relief, he went back, was scanned, and that's when the tumor was found. At that point, he was already stage IV and the tumor ran down the back of his neck.
My uncle could have opted for treatment, but the surgery would have been very disfiguring and he would not have been complaint with treatment. Given the options, my uncle chose palliative care. So he got a trach, good meds, and a few months later moved to hospice.
My uncle actually enjoyed hospice and he made his goal of making 50. So he died a happy man.
The only warning signs in hindsight were that his voice years ago changed and became gravelly. He also had a nagging cough, but being a smoker he dismissed it.
Anyhow I'm grateful that SSI and Medicaid were there to help. I don't know what we've would've done without them.
I'm both sad that he's gone and relieved. When a loved one is an addict, it's complicated.
Anyhow my uncle donated his body to science so maybe he can help in some way. Hell they could study him for the resilience of the human body. The doctor that did the biopsy was surprised to see a man with that large of a tumor walk in without assistance.
