Happy Birthday, You CRAZY Fucking Yanks!

"So, George, you're going to take on the Brits, eh? I mean, you know, as in the British Empire, the most powerful force on Earth? And what do you have, George? Oh, farmers, eh? Some boys with muskets, you say? Well, good luck with that!" (Clearly delusional.)

"So, Wilbur, you and your brother are going to build a machine, a machine that a man can get into, and fly off the ground? Um, you know, I could suggest a doctor---he's really good---to help you with that." (Immediate psychiatric intervention needed!)

"So, Mr. President, you intend to land a man on the Moon? Before 1970? Even though the Russians are way ahead right now? Um.....okay." (Obviously, the pills he's taking for back pain are having a deleterious affect on his mind."

See, that's the wonderful part of your country's insanity!

But you know what I'm going to say next, don't you? Yeah, I figured you'd figure.

Science is bad?
The Bible trumps the Constitution?
Women don't own their own bodies?
It's perfectly okay to carry loaded guns into churches, schools, and (!) bars?
Providing a modicum of care to poor people is socialism?
Taxing the uber-rich is Naziism?
Corporations are people?
Christianity should be taught in public schools? Am I reading this right?
Climate change is a hoax?
Republicans seek election to government so they can refuse to govern?
Rupert Murdoch's "news" network is given press accreditation when it's clearly agitprop?
Cliven Bundy isn't in jail? But Greenwald and Snowden are traitors? Seriously?
Sending youngsters off to unnecessary wars is A-OK?
And it's equally okay to not take care of them when they come home???

These, obviously, represent the horrible side of your country's insanity.

Now, I'm gonna say something here, and you can call the headquarters of the Mounties (613-993-7267) and tell them to arrest me for Rudeness in the First Degree, but I am gonna be unCanadian and insist that you not destroy yourselves. (Oh shit, that sounds really demanding, doesn't it? Sorry!)

You can do better than this, America! Come on! You've already done impossible things. Don't tell me you can't put the Republicans and Tea Party racists in their place! I won't hear of it! Should you fail to do so, then I, as a Canadian, shall have no choice but to write a strongly-worded letter of protest to the White House!

Now, all kidding aside, bottom line: The United States has a checkered history. Yeah, you've done some really rotten things. But I believe in mathematics, and, by my own personal calculations, America has done a lot more good in this world than it has done ill, and remains capable of nobility. My wish for you on this day is that you overcome the hateful minority, who claim to be "Real Americans," but whom, in fact, are the very definition of un-American.

Now go gorge yourselves on hot dogs and beer! (Hey, we do it here on July 1st.)

Happy 238th!

We couldn't have done it without you. You and all our other friends, whom we thank and appreciate too little.

The British and French, we saved your asses in WWII, which we never tire of reminding you. But the French saved our asses in that little dust up with King George, and England, you held out alone in the Battle of Britain until we Yanks could get our asses in gear.

Germany, we generously helped you rebuild your country after the war, and today you are closer to Roosevelt's dream for America than we are. You learned your lesson only too well. Dammit Fritz! You guys are better Americans than Americans are. Ditto for Japan.

Canada, you provided a destination for the Underground Railroad, a place of refuge for our escaped slaves, until we finally eradicated that black stain on our souls. You have also supplied a generally good example of what our country could be, if only. . . And have been slandered for your troubles by the teabaggers and GOP.

So here's to good friends and neighbors!

Fri Jul 4, 2014, 09:47 AM
Jul 2014

There are movements in Canada to do away with your single-payer healthcare system. You keep electing the Conservative Party into power. You have a total nut in charge of Toronto. Why's he still around? Plenty of nuts up in Canada too, though I'll agree not as many proportionally as we have here. We're a much larger and more diverse nation in population.

Most of what you talk about in terms of our problems are MINORITY views. Sadly, those who oppose those views aren't always as organized and vocal. THAT is the problem. APATHY mainly on the left. And while I agree MUCH more with those on the left than the right. I am fair and always talk about how the left needs to STOP THE BITCHING AND WHINING AND START THE ORGANIZING, COMMUNICATING, AND VOTING. That's not to say that there aren't bright spots. There are. But the left generally is much worse about real ORGANIZATION and TAKING THE FIGHT HARD TO THE RIGHT WING. It's weak-kneed, whiny, and jelly-spined all too often. This SHIT about taking the "high road" is a load of CRAP in many of these arguments. You need to FIGHT. And WAY too many on the left to center-left just don't get that.

Still, today we celebrate the ideals of America, many of which bear out every day. And we honor those from the past, both the leaders and the common folks, who sacrificed so much that we might have something better.

plan, Old Age Security, a fair tax system, and independent Supreme Court, a minimal military, and the kindest people this side of Thailand. And no gerrymandering or voter fraud battles or abortion fights forever.

Canada has settled law, which is actually settled and respected as settled. And no two party system that encourages corruption, a comparatively fair media. Fox News type propaganda and hate speech are banned and prosecutable.

Americans want to not reinvent the social and political shop wheels.

Just look North, it is all there. Just look.

And Canada still know how to celebrate accomplishments, not wring its hands with the negativity now prevalent in America because of Americas gloom and gloom corporate media.

Though America has Obama and Canada has Harper, America is one up on that one.

Beautiful post. I agree with everything you said. I wish I could go gorge myself on hot dogs and beer today, instead of working.

When it comes to the horrible side - please don't forget that the people responsible for most of that are severely in the minority, that they do not represent the American people as a whole. There are far more of us who are reasonable, intelligent, decent people, then there are who are absolute assholes and idiots. We've got our problems, absolutely - but there's a whole lot of us still in it, fighting the good fight for the right reasons.

When I was in college, (I only lasted a year, due to affordability) there were some people in one of my classes one day, joking about Canadians. A young Canadian woman just rolled her eyes and replied, "Did you just diss Canada? I'm gonna go cry into my free healthcare!" She soooo won that little battle.

A belated happy birthday as well, to our Canadian brothers and sisters. Hope you have an awesome day! And, you know, you don't have to be American to celebrate the fourth. Have a beer or two for me! I have to be at work, but I'll be with you in spirit.

MSM totally bought by the RW. SCOTUS out of control, bundyites, white militias, white male 'open carry' fear of the brown tyrant living at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave...........oh there is plenty more. No! ...because if you are referring to anyone other than the last choice, then you can go fuck yourself. I've lived in several(13) countries throughout Europe, Africa, South America, and Asia. Canada too. No US military assignments. Always as a working-class civilian on an extended business assignment. I've seen and experienced many things that have made me wonder "Why can't we Americans have that?", but each and every time I left my host country with more appreciation for the US than resentment.

...and I'm Black.

I can't imagine how giddy White Americans are for this place!

America isn't close to perfect. No country is close to perfect, atleast none that I've been too. They all have humans! For every one of your American criticisms "a putrid swamp of racism, class warfare, economic inequality, gender warfare...", ATLEAST two are magnified exponentially in every other country.

So leave the US and pick your poison. Either YOUR demographic will suffer to a MUCH greater degree, or OTHER demographics will. Especially for woman or the LGBTs. ESPECIALLY FOR WOMEN OR THE LGBTs!!!

Yes, we have some fucked up people and we've made mistakes. Iraq was probably the worst foreign policy decision in our history. But even with our debt, we STILL step up when other countries are slammed with quakes or floods or what have you. EVERY time. Even Iran has gotten help from us.
And I also bet the poster you're responding to has no intention of packing his bags for any other location. He's content to bitch and whine about every past transgression and act like the klan runs the country.
I, too, have lived in a couple foreign countries and felt the same as you. I'd love to cherry pick a few things and bring them back to the US.

Ask 1million dead Iraqis that you cavalierly write off as a "mistake". Ask over 1million Vietnamese whether they agree with your example of "mistake". Ask el Salvadorans if the 'death squads' we backed were a "mistake". Ask the many hundred of thousands of native americans, who still live on 'reservations', if the genocide perpetrated against them was a "mistake". We won't even go into slavery. "We have some fucked up people". You forgot to mention those "fucked up people" have been in positions of power and influence to the extent that they can and do affect us all!!!! Damn right we step up in times of catastrophe. Tis human for people to come together in times such as that. You take your "bitch and whine" statement about forgetting past transgressions and put it back in your 'god bless america' chest. Your screeching is cacophonous. Turn it off. Nope. I'm not going anywhere. The new klan is in power in our nations capital fighting our POTUS at every turn, ONLY, because of his skin color. You can take that to the bank. I do not care about your indignation and inability to accept criticism about the unnecessary inadequacies of this system perpetrated because of hate, ignorance, stupidity and finally, yes, racism. How many MORE tens of millions are dead because of other countries? Germany? China? Russia? I said we deserved criticism for our screw ups. I never "screeched" about anything. Its just a tired old song and dance about how terrible we are. And the fact that you plan on going nowhere proves my point that its not that bad here after all. If it was, the US wouldnt be the place most people in the world want to move TO. It has been and obviously STILL is today. Since any opposition to Obama is rooted in racism to you, is DU covered with racists? Cause there sure are a lot of people here who have been critical of him.

false equivalency. It's true what you say about other countries. So what. I'm talking about ONE country in particular. I'm not singing, I'm not dancing, neither are the homeless and hungry. 501 verse. You'll not get me into any discussion on the 'usual suspects' that frequent this site. The zimmerman trial told me all I needed to know about the type of people you referred to in your query. Sure a lot of people want to move here and I have spoken to a lot of them who have, and a lot have said that they didn't know the things I mentioned were so bad. Yeah a lot stay, can't blame them, yet EVERY word I have written stands on it's on merit and I stand by EVERY word. Never said it wasn't my country just don't like some of it's policies all the time and some of it's people most all the time. Your pax-americana BS goes in the round file as far as I'm concerned. Fri Aug 1, 2014, 02:39 PM

You've been portrayed (rightfully or wrongfully) as an American hater. This accusation is true if you ONLY have negative things to say. In your mind, what's the other side? If there aren't any, then the accusation holds.

I agree with all of your criticisms regarding America's past and current "mistakes" to some degree. I think your list is too short in some areas, are spillovers from colonial rule in others(slavery), and over-generalizations(Black Americans didn't massacre Native Americans), or involve multiple nations that include(d) America(the French and British started Vietnam's atrocities).

I also disagree with your notion that it's human nature to help others in need. The list of goverments that help during global disasters is usually extremely short. I'm jealous of Central and Northern Europe's health care and economic system. I'm proud of my African heritage. Asia is a second home. But for the most part, these governments don't contribute SHIT to help others. They just look at us with stupid, helpless looks on their faces, and then complain when "mistakes" are made. How about they get off their collective asses, risk their reputations, and sacrifice their troops for the greater good?! As you can tell, I'm very frustrated with that.

So, we've heard your gripes. To disprove that you aren't a US hater, what are your praises?

to you or any other person who may not like my "gripes". My "gripes" about past and present america stand. And my "gripes" are proven more and more true every day. Not much praise here because the culture is not praiseworthy. The culture is racist, both systemically and institutionally and undyingly bigoted. Slavery is over but blacks and whites still are dealing with the aftermath of that despicable institution in the 21st century, generations away from your pax americana oversimplifications. Iraq, same as Vietnam and even more shameful. Nope not much praise here and I really can't care about those opinions opposed to mine about so-called american exceptionalism. Exceptionally hypocritical in my book.

Be proud of your country, it's your right. But by your responses, I KNOW you still have some experience to gain. You'll learn. Maybe.

I gave you a chance. Sucks for you that ALL of your US experiences have been negative. I've had plenty burdens and blessings during my 43 years in the US. I KNOW you still have some experience to gain. You'll learn.

...nah, you lack the capacity.

Especially your last paragraph. We saw a good example in the 90s when the whole Balkans thing blew open. Europe just wouldnt commit to anything to stop the bloodshed. Only after the US got involved did it stop. Otherwise Serbia would have run over everyone else.

I won't mention again anything that has happened locally (US) lately because both you and your friend are beyond learning anything useful. Stay as you are, it's your way.... Buh bye!

First of all, thank you for the response. I prefer to criticize America from a position of Love, not hate...the way my parents disciplined/love me. I do it because I want the US to be better, not to destroy it.

I enjoy folks who feel the same.

Lastly, I'm an engineer. I've frequently deployed to foreign and domestic locations to install, test, and manage wireless networks. The experience/education has magnified my progressive feelings.

All the Best!

I've had experience outside this country also and experience with all those mentioned by you. You can appreciate all you have as an (black) american. Good for you. I appreciate the fact that I have a leg up on some citizens of the world also. You can have experiences in other countries, like I did, and say america has em beat on that score or with that system. No problem. Yet, once I returned and still had to deal with the ignorance, stupidity, corruption, bigotry, racism of the american political and cultural system called 'democracy', I got and remain very cynical of american culture and politics. You can get righteously indignant about me slamming the hypocrisy of this country, I COULD CARE LESS. I'm not looking for perfection. That idealism was trashed many decades ago while visiting, under arms, another county we went to war against to shine our vaunted light of democracy on their faulted system and make them 'better'. That turned out right. Not. Ask the million or so dead Iraqis whether they see that vaunted light of american democracy shining in their country. As far as other countries experiencing their own swamps of putridness, no doubt, I've smelled it metaphorically and literally. Yet this country continues to hold itself up as the shining light and all I have experienced is a dull lamp 25 watts or so. I bet the million or so Iraqis dead aren't seeing that light at all, do you think? The last years since 2000 has seen that lamp dim even more. Oh, it flickered a little brighter in 2008, but the last six years of ignorance and stupidity exhibited by that certain sector of american toward my POTUS, just because of his skin color, has dimmed that light again.

I know that there are better systems than this one, that try to take care of their citizens, without money as first criteria. I think that if Canada can offer universal healthcare to it's citizens, so could we. But no, the comprised health care system allowed into being by this political system still does not offer universal anything, has been voted on to be repealed 50 times by that sector of anti-obama american, hypocrisy anyone? You can blubber and bluster all you please about the merits of american living, yet it's all wasted as long as the hypocrisy, as mentioned, in my putrid statement, remains. People are homeless and hungry because certain sector(s) of american people see food aid for the hungry as an entitlement. That sector also ensures that banks can throw people out of their homes into the streets if a job is lost or catastrophic illness wipes out savings. Don't tell me about the ugliness in other countries being worse than here. FALSE EQUIVALENCY. You stay good and proud as an american. That's one right you'll always be allowed....okay? I will remain here to continue to point out the hypocrisy of our money poisoned system of political corruption that I had to fight tooth and nail to be allowed to vote in. Talk about putrid hypocrisy. I will continue to point out the racism, sexism, homophobic insanity, fear of gender equality, homelessness, poverty, hunger and the many more glaring inadequacies of our 'exceptional', vaunted system till it is changed completely or I leave this damned existence.

Don't ever presume that just because you are a black american who, I feel, allows american lies to cloud your ability to be rational and truthful about this system that, I, as another 'black' american will agree with you. To hell with your last statement, the point is, those demographics mentioned by you should not be suffering to the extent they do in THIS country with the resources and finances available in one of the richest countries on this planet. It's my country and I'll be damned if I leave before I see the changes necessary for true equality in THIS county.

44. Nice national anthem you got there

And I'm not trying to be snarky.

When there used to be a Hartford Whalers hockey team, they played both the American and Canadian anthems before the game, which was very moving for me.

Back before some ill conceived legislation*, there was a major NHRA big meet at Sanair Raceway near Montreal. I think they played the Canadian anthem before racing commenced Sunday? I am always moved at the end of the anthem on Sunday because the whirrr of electric starters to fire the Top Fuel motors begins right at "...and the home of the brave." Then BOOM the loudest machines in all of motor sports are fired to begin the Sumo ritual burnouts, back up, stage and launch.

I attended in the early nineties and it was neat to tourist Montreal on Monday after the races. It was also nice to visit Toronto when I went to SUCB Buffalo. Blue Jays game once and a bitchen science museum, which displayed the Summers Brothers 4 engine Bonneville streamliner at the time.

And if I had been drafted in 1972, I would have lived up there until Carter granted amnesty

Seriously, that's what they'd say, because that's all they know.

So when are you guys gonna invade us and save our asses? C'mon, you guys are friends with those first world countries we hear about. You know the ones with universal healthcare and free "real" education and Jesus-free places and sane gun laws. Why won't you guys invade us and save us?

But not like the US "saved" Iraq. Shit, no. We don't want a 'make-rich-people-richer-and-kill-people' invasion. We want a 'save-the-99%' invasion. A cultural invasion. Commandeer our airwaves.

Please! We already like hockey. Pretty please?

We're not all self absorbed selfish mean scumbags. That's only the bullies that run everything now.

The rest of us are pretty normal and have been responding well to the corporate conditioning we're swimming in designed to make us all believe we are all utterly powerless.

So we are.

In spite of what the great Chris Hedges has said, something like; "It only takes engagement of ONE PERCENT of the population to trigger a revolution." Chris should know, he's covered such revolutions in Eastern Europe before he got canned by the NY Times cuz he was anti-2003-Iraq-invasion.

Unfortunately, I couldn't agree with you more. I love my country, but it's not a blind love. We have a lot of problems. The most dangerous of which is a demented hoard of psychotics who insist that they love America, too. And that the best expression of that love is a desire to see the entire country fall apart into mutually hostile fractured states with no governing authority, and an anarchic public demeanor consisting of violent gun-play over petty grievances, and a Guns-N-Roses "Welcome To The Jungle" outlook.

I take great comfort in Bill Clinton's adage that there is nothing wrong with America that can't be fixed by what's right with America. But he said that over twenty years ago, before 9/11 and the advent of the national-security police state, and before the rise of the Tea Party, which is effectively described in the paragraph above.

There are still millions of people in this country who still view us as a national community, and that any thing great we may achieve will only be attained if we work together. But we are being opposed by a small group of very wealthy people who owe no allegiance to anything but their own rapidly increasing riches. And they are cheered on by a larger group of people who own no wealth, but possess broken spirits embittered by ignorance, provincialism, pettiness, hatred, suspicion, bigotry, racism, and a taste for meaningless violence.

We've weathered storms in the past, and survived. I hope we will weather this current, awful tempest.

There are still people who love this country, and I'm one of them.

by unscrupulous shysters who represent the wealthy elites at the cost of everyone else. They succeed by appealing to the worst fears and lowest instincts, and employing a Machiavellian strategy of pitting groups that should be aligned with one another against each other.
Bigotry trumping reality seems to be an American value that the media conveniently avoids.
"If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you." ~
LYNDON B. JOHNSON, 1960, remark to Bill Moyers, "What a Real President Was Like," Washington Post, 13 November 1988.
The Republicans have seized this concept and used it to impose their immoral agenda on the vast majority of Americans.
The Supreme (mediocre) Court has been stacked in favor of the wealthy elites and has paved the road to a two tiered system of lords and serfs that essentially establishes a permanent underclass and eliminates a thriving middle class. The principles of the Founding Fathers have been perverted by a Court that has damaged this country and made us diminished for the benefit of billionaires like the Koch brothers.
