UPDATE: More than 60 women, girls escape Islamist abductors in Nigeria
Maiduguri (Nigeria) (AFP) - More than 60 women and girls abducted last month by suspected Boko Haram militants northeast Nigeria have escaped their captors, sources said Sunday.
Local vigilante Abbas Gava said he had "received an alert from my colleagues ... that about 63 of the abducted women and girls had made it back home". A high-level security source in Borno state capital Maiduguri, who requested anonymity, confirmed the escape.

I have just received an alert from my colleagues in Damboa area that about 63 of the abducted women and girls had made it back home. They took the bold step when their abductors moved out to carry out an operation, said Abbas Gava, an official of the Vigilante group.
We dont have the details of their escape yet, but we believe God gave them the opportunity at the time the insurgents came in their large numbers to attack Damboa where about 12 soldiers, five policemen, over 50 Boko Haram members and unspecified number of civilians were killed yesterday (Saturday).
Mr. Gava said about five women and two girls still remain under captivity. One of the women is said to be a nursing mother.
A top security officer in Maiduguri, who asked not to be named, confirmed the escape to PREMIUM TIMES.
There is no doubt about your report; the women and girls were able to escape, said the source. I guess it was during the time the gunmen were attacking Damboa; left behind just some few men to watch over the women, but the women took advantage of an opportunity when the guys were dozing off, and bolted away but quietly . . .

. . . I was just getting frantic with my wife about how much time had passed without any other source stepping up and I looked at the clock and realized it had only been a few minutes.
I'm anxious to see if this bears out, as well.

(89,248 posts)the ones from the kidnapping from the school or later ones .
if it's the ones from later ones i wonder if they saw that nobody is going to help them so they know the only way out was for them to try themselves and even risking their lives to do it.
i just hope it's true and more girls can get out .

(19,564 posts)Thank you, bigtree for the update. It's good to hear some positive news coming from that region.
I can't wait until we hear their story, not to mention that when debriefed, they may have valuable info on where the others are.

(45,984 posts)You go, girls.
... if they are from the first 275 who were kidnapped, that means 212 girls are still behind. The ones who were able to escape will have all kinds of info about where the others might be!
I hope this report is true.

(2,185 posts)is there any verification from western news sources?
I couldn't find any other reports, not from BBC, or CNN , I even checked Al Jazira American..
all we have is the one report...AFP?
. . . and their sources aren't American either.
I think confirmation from our own government would make it more reliable, but, so far, nothing from the U.S.

(89,248 posts)maybe they don't want to reveal too much . especially because there are still other girls being held.
and though i don't have much hope for this but maybe they want to get info from those who got away to try to get the others back.

(8,084 posts)what a shitty god to have allowed them to be kidnapped i. The first place. Is god going to go back and get the 137 that were left behind. Or is god busy picking his winning NFL tram for next fall.
I am relived those young women had tge courage to save themselves, Let's hope the rest of them realize that if they want freedom they have to run when they get the chance

(8,084 posts)The year 9/11 happened, And they said, "thank god you survived"
I flipped. It's not god Humans are doing horrible things to other humans, because shitty humans exist. The only thing that protects us is ourselves and other humans that are not shitty.
These girls were saved because they had the courage to run. If they used a god belief to find the courage so be it, but they did all the work themselves

(8,084 posts)But if this was a god's plan to save these women it was bit of a convoluted fk up

12 Soldiers
5 policemen and an
unspecified number of civilians were killed yesterday
So this was god's plan have a bunch of innocent people killed to save 63 Women?
Don't get me wrong I am very happy for their families and their freedom, but giving a god credit means it also has to shoulder the blame for families who lost loved one in the insurgents
Or, The women saved themselves in the mist of utter chaos created by humans. And they deserve the Credit for their bravery in escaping not a god.
