Update on White Plains Police Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain: shooter sued for racism in 2008

Exclusive: Cop in Fatal Shooting of Ex-Marine Kenneth Chamberlain ID’d, Sued in 2008 Racism Case

In a broadcast exclusive, we reveal the name of the police officer who allegedly killed 68-year-old Kenneth Chamberlain, the retired African-American Marine who was shot dead in his own home in White Plains, New York, in November after he inadvertently triggered his medical-alert pendant. Documented in audio recordings, the White Plains police reportedly used a racial slur, burst through Chamberlain’s door, tasered him, then shot him dead. The alleged shooter, Officer Anthony Carelli, is due in court later this month in an unrelated 2008 police brutality case. He is accused of being the most brutal of a group of officers who allegedly beat two arrestees of Jordanian descent and called them “rag heads.” Despite repeated requests from Chamberlain’s family for the name of the officer who killed him, White Plains Public Safety Commissioner David Chong only named Carelli as the shooter this morning, after his name appeared in an article written by Democracy Now!’s Juan Gonzalez in the New York Daily News. The White Plains police have refused to say whether Carelli has been disciplined or assigned to desk duty after the fatal shooting of Chamberlain. We get an update on the Chamberlain case from the victim’s son, Kenneth Chamberlain, Jr., and his two attorneys, Mayo Bartlett and Abdulwali Muhammad. We also speak with Gus Dimopoulos, a lawyer for the 2008 victims, Jereis Hatter and Salameh Hatter. [Transcript to come. Check back soon.]

to a pole, hitting him in the head and kicking him in the groin and calling him a "raghead".

The police claim there is no video of that beating although it took place in police headquarters.

Oh, and the attorney for the Chamberlain family said that the racial epithets they heard on the audio recording of their dad's murder were NOT in the transcript the police had given them.

NO not any more.
You'd think we enslaved these racists' ancestors and then employed Jim Crow or invented stupid three strike laws to throw hundreds of thousands of them in jail.

I can't even keep track of all the news stories of police abusing minority detainees. And that doesn't even begin to address what happens to them after that.

I can't believe these people tried to hide the racial aspects of this murder when they know there is audio and video everywhere any more. Unbelievable.

And in the interview this morning, the fact that the police were offered every opportunity to back out of this action, by the alarm company, by Chamberlain's sister, his son, his niece, shows this department is out of control. They claimed Mr. Chamberlain was mentally disturbed and on the audio, you can hear him telling the police very rationally that he is okay, that he doesn't need help and to desist.

WTF is going on at the PDs? How can things get that bad, or have they always been this bad but in the past luck was on the side of the cops? I too cannot believe the PD is full of that many stupid, evil people.

I agree, great job.

The Daily News has cracked a tightly kept secret, revealing for the first time the identity of the cop who fatally shot a former Marine almost five months ago.

He is White Plains Officer Anthony Carelli.

In a shocking twist, The News has learned that Carelli, who killed retired Marine Kenneth Chamberlain Sr. on Nov. 19, is due in court later this month in a federal police brutality case.

Carelli is one of six cops accused in a $10 million civil suit brought by twin brothers who say he battered them during a disorderly-conduct arrest outside the Black Bear Saloon in downtown White Plains during Memorial Day weekend 2008.

Jereis (Jerry) Hatter and Salameh (Sal) Hatter, 27, claim Carelli was the most brutal of the officers who beat and kicked them while they were handcuffed, calling them “rag heads.” Their parents are Jordanian immigrants.

Then he would have been in jail, and unable to commit the recent murder.

It's unreal. And the White Plains PD tried to obfuscate the racial nature of the shooting of Mr. Chamberlain by censoring the epithets in the transcript they delivered to the family. In it up to their eyeballs.

A police officer can commit a crime in full view of fellow police, and it is as if he did the deed in a desert place in the dark of night miles from any person awake with open eyes.
