Seattle City Attorney Buys Legal Pot for 'Personal Enjoyment'

SEATTLE — Surrounded by thousands of packages of marijuana, Seattle's top prosecutor sought some advice: Which one should he buy?

A new day, indeed.

Twenty months after voters legalized recreational cannabis for adults over 21, Washington state's first few licensed pot shops opened for business Tuesday, catering to hundreds of customers who lined up outside, thrilled to be part of the historic moment.

The pot being sold at four stores in Seattle, Bellingham, Prosser and Spokane was regulated, tested for impurities, heavily taxed and in short supply — such short supply that several other shops couldn't open because they had nothing to sell.

Pete Holmes, Seattle's elected city attorney and a main backer of the state's recreational marijuana law, said he wanted to be one of the first customers to demonstrate there are alternatives to the nation's failed drug war.

If all of the predictions of utter doom fail to materialize, activists in other states are going to have a lot of ammunition to use in their own attempts to sway public opinion and get referendums going. Heck, with tax money flowing in, even cash-strapped Republican govs might start reconsidering.

Colorado's done pretty well for the last 6 months.

If those idiots could quit tripping over their own egos, they'd realize this is a damn Republican wet dream. Millions of tax dollars pumped into their economies by a "sin tax" on stoners, the ability to use a police force more efficiently, no more minor drug offenders in jail so reduced costs there, increased tourism, reduced crime...damn, the list goes on and on. And all without raising taxes on their wealthy friends and supporters. The only fly I see in the ointment is, being Republicans, they won't be happy actually using all those new found dollars for the public good. My guess is they'll reduce taxes on those wealthy friends so they end up with a zero sum for public spending.

Look at Philly. Eventually Pittsburgh will comply, just to keep up with the hated big brother. And then the other cities will fall in line.

Not going to make bets about, say, Bradford or McKean.

how many times has this guy prosecuted a case involving cannabis and then gone home to toke up?

If I sound bitter and cynical, it is only because I am.
