Last night, Jennifer Granholm was joined in ‘The War Room’ by Donald Fowler, Former National Chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Buzz about gay marriage being added to the platform has been growing for several weeks. Now, Fowler is among a group of respected politicians, including more than 25 senators, urging the Democratic Party to officially support the freedom to marry “for all loving and committed couples.”

Fowler told Granholm, “When I was young and in school and in college, I never experienced an African American as a peer. Not until I got into the military did I do that. We had the Civil Rights Act of ’64 and the Voting Rights Act of ’65 and we’ve come a long way on that issue.” He explains that while the rights of women and disabled Americans are now protected, the U.S. lags behind in affirming the rights of the LGBT community. “This is a political issue that needs to be addressed. It’s an issue of values, and it’s an issue that will make America a better democracy and a better place to live,” he said.

To date, more than 36,000 people have signed the petition, which urges those drafting the Democratic Party platform to affirm the rights of same-sex couples to marry by asking for the inclusion of the following text:

“The Democratic Party supports the full inclusion of all families in the life of our nation, with equal respect, responsibility, and protection under the law, including the freedom to marry. Government has no business putting barriers in the path of people seeking to care for their family members, particularly in challenging economic times. We support the Respect for Marriage Act and the overturning of the federal so-called “Defense of Marriage Act,” and oppose discriminatory constitutional amendments and other attempts to deny the freedom to marry to loving and committed same-sex couples.”

To add your voice in support of this call, you canvisit the Freedom To Marry campaign’s website and sign the petition:

be a political plus, not a minus, not to mention that regardless of politics it would be the right thing to do.
