Happy 2nd annual Malala Day!

Terrorists tried to make sure I would never celebrate my 17th birthday, or finish another year of school.

On July 14th, I will do both.

But this year that moment will be bittersweet. While we celebrate being stronger than our opponents, and marching towards education for all, we also fear for our sisters under attack for standing up for that basic right, simply by going to school.

On my birthday last year — the very first “Malala Day” — I stood before the UN and spoke up for girls' rights. You joined with letters, messages and photos of support. Thank you.

This year, we need to raise our voices even louder. I'm asking you to stand with me again on Malala Day, July 14th, to say: We are stronger than the enemies of education. We are stronger than fear, hatred, violence and poverty.

Time just moves too fast these days.

Anyway, happy birthday to Malala. Born on Bastille Day, how appropriate.
