Donate to your local charity if you shop Amazon Smile...

I would NEVER advertise for Amazon, but this is worth it I think...

If you sign up for Amazon Smile, purchases that qualify (this is the big question of course) they will send 0.5% of the amount to your favorite charity.

I signed up and was actually able to find my local PLANNED PARENTHOOD, which I chose. This way my donation will actually go locally.

I then went to my local Planned Parenthood to tell them about this in case they didnt know.

I apologize if mentioning a brand name is against the rules, I am no big fan of Amazon but because of where I live I have to buy lots of stuff online and they are the easiest and most convenient.

thanks...

2. Cool, when I picked my local PP a message came up that Amazon had to contact them to make

sure they were ready to receive the donations.

Which is why I drove to my local PP to remind them about this so they would be pro active

I do see that most of what I have bought recently DOES qualify for the donation...

3. Send the money to the charity and skip amazon

One half of one percent is chicken doody. You spend $100, they donate 50 cents.

Really, you would sign up for this and let them track your every move and browbeat publishers and others for this pittance?

5. If I'm spending the money anyway, why not divert even a small part of it?

Their "tracking" consists of knowing what products and content I am likely to find interesting and offering it to me. That's a win-win that helps me greatly. I'm certainly not going to object to getting better targetted ads and hints that things I have bought before have fallen in price. Why would I?

9. Amazon is a horrible corporation

You'll be helping them to maintain their predatory and abusive practices while doing almost nothing to help a local charity. I, personally, would feel like a big sucker (and a betrayer of my own principles) to join in this come on.

When somebody else can meet my needs with a couple of clicks and no wasted time or trips I might consider buying from them.

Me, I prefer to help my community by shopping and buying local wherever possible. Not by supporting Amazon's megalomaniac cutthroat practices.

We love to rail against corporate America here, but no one seems to really care about it in practice.

I try to buy almost nothing from Amazon. I used to limit it to two things only: toner cartridges for my printer and the (expensive) filters for our water filtration system. Now, however, Amazon does not give me a better price on either of those items. I can get the toner at the same price from a local retailer that is five blocks from my house; and I asked a local appliance store if they would match the price from another retailer selling through Amazon: they said sure, and delivered it with no shipping fee. Win, win; and two local stores, with local jobs, benefited. I had the same amount of money to donate to charity. And I donate much more than a lousy half of a percent of a purchase.

11. If you can afford to spend $100 on Amazon,

You could drop 50 cents in a bucket at your local charity.

And if you can only afford to spend $20, you could part with a lousy 10 cents for the charity ... Which is all Amazon is donating.

You are helping Amazon with this, not any needy organization. But they want you to sign up with them and not feel guilty.

Im about to make a 250 dollar purchase. Sure amazon will only donate 1.25, but its better than donating 0.

And I certainly can afford to donate money to a charity, but why not do both?

4. Nice find

I spend about $5k with Amazon a year and I had never heard of this option.

I signed up and picked a local pet adoption place. They'll only get $25 a year or so even from a fairly regular Amazon shopper like me but every little helps.

Thanks for sharing.

I use smile but I didn't see that there was a search bar to find other charities that aren't listed on the main scroll. Thanks.

Being ideologically pure in the society we live in is nigh impossible, so ignore the haters.

I try to avoid Amazon, but I shop there sometimes.
It's nice to know that something goes to the cause of my choice when I do.
