Water containing strontium leaks from Fukushima plant into sea

Tepco apologizes.

TOKYO —
Officials of Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) said Thursday that radioactive water containing strontium-90 leaked out of the stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant into the sea.
Strontium-90 is a radioactive isotope of strontium, with a half-life of 28.8 years. Its presence in the human body can cause bone cancer, cancer of nearby tissues and leukemia.
TEPCO said it believed that up to 12 tons of waste water containing strontium leaked into the sea.

Smelt in Gunma lake four times over new legal radiation limit

Lake Onuma in Maebashi, famous for its Japanese smelt fishing, was the source of the fish that reportedly tested 426 becquerels per kilo, Fuji TV reported Wednesday.
Local authorities say the smelt was tested on March 28. They added that the smelt fishing season has now ended, and that fishing for smelt is now banned.

Meanwhile, shiitake mushrooms in Miyagi Prefecture and bamboo shoots in Chiba Prefecture were also found to have levels of radioactive cesium over the new limits.
Shiitake mushrooms grown in Murata, Miyagi, contained 350 becquerels of radioactive cesium, while bamboo shoots grown in the Chiba towns of Kisarazu and Ichihara had 120 becquerels, Fuji TV reported.

You were one of the first to be right on it.
When others were poo-pooing and downplaying this catastrophe, you were warning people this was not over by a long shot.
I remember very well.
Thanks for all you do and your wisdom.

He was a submariner, while not a nuke he learned basic, unclassed theory.

I pumped him for knowledge. That and the plans for Tijuana due to San Onofre, and briefs from Laguna Verde experts.

TOKYO —

Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) said Friday 460 employees sought voluntary retirement in fiscal 2011.
The main reason given for the increasing number by employees were threats and bullying of their families by people angry at TEPCO’s response to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear crisis.
TEPCO announced this week it was cutting executives’ annual income by 25% and everyone else’s salaries by 20%. It also said it would not be paying any bonuses this year.
