Excerpts:
On Thursday afternoon, our commanders ordered us to get into the lorries with our weapons and plenty of ammunition. Perhaps ten minutes earlier, there had been a huge explosion in the sky. Weve just shot down one of the Kiev Fascists planes, they told us, warning us to take care because at least some of the crew had reportedly baled out. White objects had been seen floating in the clouds. We might have had to fight to round them up.

My men and I were looking for parachutes on the ground and in the trees. All of a sudden, I saw scraps of material in a clearing. Underneath I found the body of a little girl, who cant have been more than five. She was lying face down. It was awful. That was when I realised it was a civilian plane. Not a military one. And all these dead people were civilians. A heap of burst suitcases confirmed it.

Yet the militiamen showed no sense of guilt, contradicting their commander who supplied the official version. Obviously, it wasnt us that shot the jet down. We havent got missiles that reach that high. This crime was committed by the bandits who take orders from the Kiev government. One of their fighters could easily have shot down the Malaysian Airlines plane, they point out.
How did they come to the conclusion that they had downed an ukrainian fighter-jet?
Maybe it was simple logic: The separatists don't have planes, so any plane is ukrainian and any downed plane was shot down by themselves.
Maybe it was a slip of the tongue, indicating that the separatists shot MH17 down by accident.
And the denial about missiles that reach that high isn't very believable, coming from a lowly frontline-trooper.
