‘Modern Family’ Star Refuses To Have Picture Taken With Homophobe Rick Santorum

Even politicians can get a little starstruck around celebrities. But beware: if you’re the kind of politician who bashes gay people on a regular basis, asking an actor who has publicly supported gay rights and plays one on TV may get you the cold shoulder.

According to Modern Family’s Eric Stonestreet, Republican presidential nominee also-ran Rick Santorum was at the White House Correspondents Dinner and approached him for a picture with himself and his kids. Stonestreet, who’s character on the show is openly gay, said it was never going to happen.

“It was at a time when he was publicly saying, ‘Gay marriage, gay marriage’ and I’m like, ‘You know, I can’t do it.”

But Stonestreet wasn’t about to ruin Santorum’s children’s opportunity just because their father is an unapologetic homophobe. He offered to have a picture taken with just them, asking Rick to stay out of frame.

“It was with him and his kids or something like that, and I said, ‘I’d be happy to take a picture with the kids,’ but I can’t just be in a picture with you.”

Stonestreet added that he is continually shocked by who (Republican and Democrat) say they love Modern Family and count themselves as fans. He pointed out that just recently President Barack Obama had mentioned in an interview that his daughters love his character, Cam, and the relationship he has with his husband, Mitch (played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who unlike Stonestreet, is actually gay).

When asked whether he felt his character has had an impact on gay rights in this country, he said he believed that “we are having an impact” by “normalizing” the idea of same-sex couples.

Modern Family is a show that Santorum must hate- unless this was prior to the show being aired. I'm on dial up right now so didn't try to follow the link.

Without having to take it seriously for anything else...which he wouldn't be wrong for doing. All forms of art can mean different things for every single person. That being said...I hope he tries to go play in DC traffic soon.

that the kids like the show, and Dad doesn't know much about it. Dad is too busy bashing gay people and brown people and plotting another failed run at the presidency to pay attention to everything his kids watch.

So, when his kiddies said "Daddy! Daddy! there's the guy from Modern Family, can we have a picture with him? We love that show." he went up to Stonestreet like a good dad would and asked for the picture.

because they think that it is making fun of the people portrayed instead of making them into real ordinary people with the same feelings, hopes, and fears as the rest of the population.

...they're fine with such minorities playing the "jester" and entertaining them. They just don't want them to actually be their neighbors, school teacher, doctors, presidents, etc. If they're entertainers, they're working for them (sic) and need not be taken seriously. If they're changing actual marriage laws and/or running for office...well, that's a power and that's not something Rick and those like him want such minorities to have.

Santorum will no doubt try to make hay out of this by complaining of 'persecution' for his beliefs. That way, 'not-having-your-pic-taken-with-a-celebrity' will count as persecution.

Their response was like: I want to go home and enjoy 2 hrs of entertainment but these Hollywood people want to constantly put politics into my entertainment (who made homosexuality a political issue?). All I want to be is entertained but here they are denigrating me based on my politics. Hey morons stop.

Yes, a man that spends 3hrs talking political infotainment that denigrates one side of the aisle because they refuse to hate gay people complained that modern family is hurting him by pointing out same sex is such a non-issue you can place it in a comedic family sitcom and get laughs. How dare the rest of society have political opinions, it is only what this man does for a living, Self awareness is not a strong suit of conservatives.

I knew one of the actors was gay IRL, but didn't know which. I was having fun watching the show and NOT knowing, sort of playing a "is there a stereotyping bigot in my head?" game. I actually avoided reading anything about either actor.

Now, I know. Damn.

I love them both, so, so much. Actually, there isn't one single actor in that show that I don't love. Thanks for posting. Sharing...

Most would try not to cause a scene and just acquiesce. It takes courage to refuse a photo with a senator who's standing right in front of you.

We do some pbs and do not have cable
My kids like what would you do?
Us meh
but the whole family likes to watch Modern Family
Then the TV stays dark until maybe something on pbs
This show is a great discussion starter
Uptights ask you let your young kids watch that?
They are not that young and we have no problem with validating there are all kinds of families !
I would not let the kids listen to Santorum that is child abuse IMO
