Hillary kinda called the Israeli government a bunch of liars

The major headlines from Hillary Clinton's comments about Israel were her misguided apologism for Israel's Ba'ath-like brutality in Gaza.

But, in terms of the long game and eventual resolution of the conflict, she appears to see things with very clear eyes.

Zakaria: Martin Indyk has just resigned as the kind of sherpa of the peace process. And he says that the immediate trigger, in his view – there were many – was the fact that the Palestinians looked at the Israeli continued settlement activity…

Clinton: Right.

Zakaria:…and said these guys are not serious, we’re never going to be able to get a state…

Right.

Zakaria:…look at what they’re doing.

Clinton: This is my biggest complaint with the Israeli government. I’m a strong supporter of Israel, a strong supporter of their right to defend themselves. But the continuing settlements, which have been denounced by successive American administrations on both sides of the aisle, are clearly a terrible signal to send if,at the same time, you claim you’re looking for a two-state solution.

The wording is a subtle, but notable, shift in the normal platitudes about how bad the settlements are. Instead of saying that they are an obstacle to peace blah blah blah, she suggested that settlement building/expansion is not something someone who is honestly serious about a two-state solution would pursue. And she states that Israel "claims" to be looking for a two-state solution.

Just as only Nixon could go to China, maybe only Hillary can openly question whether Israel is a good-faith partner for peace.

He said Israel was not willing to even consider surrendering "security control" of any part of the entire West Bank. In other words, occupation now, occupation tomorrow, occupation forever.

Presumably because of the "facts" he's worked so hard to "build on the ground" (e.g., settlements).

By the time anyone in the US gets around to actually denouncing Israel's policies (as they so richly deserve to be denounced), Israel's ethnic cleansing of the West Bank will have been completed.

usually complicit Corporate Media, while still remembering to push the talking points in favor of Israel, HAS covered to some extent, the killing of Palestinians.

It's subtle, but for whatever reason, maybe Netanyahu's disrespect for our Govt, maybe world opinion which is horrified by these 'wars' on the Palestinian people, the Israeli press attacking this president, who knows, but slight though it is, people have noted it.

They need to speak out forcefully and more, take action such as ending the funding of Israel's attacks on Gaza. But that would take courage, and we don't have too many courageous leaders other than Carter who has always been outspoken about the issue.

Peace would mean having to give up dreams of expelling the Palestinians so as to illegally annex the West Bank and Gaza. Continued warfare between unequal parties favors the stronger party.
