At least in terms of anime. That subculture has been inbred too badly for the last decade to the point where the Japanese distributors refuse to license it overseas for fears of what the outcry would be. While there's been some fun stuff as well, it's dominated by disturbing drek.

thankfully, the manga side has turned out really well. The folks at Project-H Books have been bringing out what's really great couples friendly hentai manga that's heavy on story, real world settings and so forth. Some over the top stuff too, but largely it's very good stuff.
