... Many other countries have condemned the "disproportionate use of force" by Israel, but most including Argentina, which normally echoes Brazil's stands have simultaneously condemned Hamas for its systematic rocket attacks against Israeli civilian targets, which Israel says started the latest round of violence.
Furthermore, the United States and the 28-member European Union, which consider Hamas as a terrorist group, have specifically condemned Hamas use of civilians as human shields.
On July 17, the United Nations agency responsible for Palestinian refugees, known by its acronym UNRWA, announced that it had discovered 20 Hamas rockets hidden in a U.N. school in Gaza. A few days later, UNRWA announced a similar finding at another U.N. school.
Following Brazil's one-sided condemnation of Israel, Israel's foreign ministry issued a statement saying that Brazil's behavior "illustrates the reason why that economic and cultural giant remains politically irrelevant" on the world scene. Israeli officials said Israel's unusually strong reaction was primarily triggered by Brazil's decision to recall its ambassador.

I work for a company that is focusing on important markets. Those markets are Brazil, India, India and China.
I don't see Israel in the mix. They are financially, strategically and tactically irrelevant.

News flash to you--- you have no idea what you are talking about.

So it's understandable if Swede Atlanta sees Israel as irrelevant by comparison considering the vast difference in global economic impact.
But the OP mentions political irrelevance. I would suggest that staying politically relevant by causing problems in the Middle East, specifically committing human rights violations against Arabs, is probably not the kind of political relevance Brazil would desire.

(6,837 posts)Same can be said for its military.
I admire Israel for a lot of reasons. But I cannot support its disproportionate strikes in Gaza. That makes me sad. It not only inflicts a huge amount of unnecessary pain on innocent Palestinians, it probably sets Israeli security back as well.

(2,219 posts)If you were on the receiving end of years of missiles and other bombs and now 2400 missiles in less than one month , what would be your idea of proportional force?
LuckyTheDog
(6,837 posts)And I also get that Hamas intentionally uses women and children as human shields.
But it's hard not to be moved by the images of civilian deaths, or prison-like existence of people in Gaza. There is a lot to dislike on both sides of this.
I have nothing good to say about Hamas. But what Israel is doing is brutal.
Overall, my reaction is to just be sick about the whole thing.

(42,702 posts)There are many rankings of countries for technology, innovation, medicine. While Israel's rankings on those lists varies, here's one that ranks it 3rd. https://www.copy.com/s/VmbUNjaGxmEYfSlq/2013%20US-Israel%20Innovation%20Index.pdf
But if you don't want to accept that one, you can search and find others. As I said, Israel's ranking varies. But one thing that is pretty consistent: it blows Brazil out of the water. For example, the Bloomberg rankings that put Israel 30th in innovation put Brazil at number 45. And the WHO ranking that put Israel 28th in health care systems puts Brazil at 125th.

That health system ranking is 14 years old. A more recent study by Bloomberg puts Israel 4th. Brazil? 48th.

There are also rankings where Brazil puts Israel out of water. Brazil is the world leader in most rankings related to bioethanol technology, production and use, for example. Brazil is also ranked 1st in deepwater drilling technology and is the world leader in researches in tropical medicine, etc.

(38 posts)First, normal diplomats just don't go out calling another country a "diplomatic midget" while their country is engaging in its 1254³³th war since it has been created. How good are they at diplomacy?
Second, if that offense is directed to a country that is 425 times larger in area, 25 times larger in population, and 10 times larger in economy than his, it looks silly. If you remember that country, unlike his, is praised for its peaceful approach in international issues, has no enemies anywhere in the world, has good diplomatic relations with all the nations on Earth, has been living in peace with its neighbors for almost a century and a half and fought its last war before Israel even existed, it seems even more silly.
Third, when that same country is his largest commercial partner in Latin America, his fourth biggest client of high tech and military material in the planet, and has the 9th largest jewish community in the world, that looks an error.
Fourth, when that same country that he calls a "diplomatic midget" is directly connected to the origin of Israel, having lobbied in favor of them like Brazil's representative Oswaldo Aranha did, and that country even presided the United Nations session that approved the creation of their state and hold the Minerva Vote in favor of them, that seems ungrateful.
I assume they just don't go out naming Tel-Aviv streets in honor of "unimportant" people from "diplomatic midget" countries.
