Obama said that peoples struggles are more important than the phony scandals. He said, Imagine how much further along the economy would be if Congress was doing its job too. Wed be doing great. The president added that if Congress felt the same sense of urgency that the American people did we could help a lot more families.
Later the president said that Republicans keep blocking and voting down every idea that would have an impact on middle class families. Obama said, They havent been that helpful. They havent been as constructive as I would have hoped. Obama later told Congress to come on and help a little bit, Stop being mad all the time. Stop just hating all the time.
The president said that the main vote that House Republicans have scheduled for today is to decide whether or not to sue me for doing my job. He said, But think about this, they have announced that they are going to sue me for taking executive actions to help people. So you know, theyre mad because Im doing my job, and, by the way, I told them, I said Id be happy to do it with you. So the only reason I am doing it on my own is because you dont do anything, but if you want lets work together. Everybody recognizes this is a political stunt, but its worse than that, because every vote theyre taking like that is a vote they are not taking to actually help you. When they had taken fifty votes to repeal the Affordable Care Act, that was time they could have spent working constructively to help you on some things. By the way, do you know whos paying for the suit they are going to file? You. No, no, youre paying for it, and its estimated that by the time the thing is done, I would have already left office, so its not a productive thing to do.
The president ripped Boehners lawsuit apart in a few minutes and demonstrated why this obvious political move is such a disaster for the Republican Party. Democrats have been easily able to turn the lawsuit into an indictment of Republican priorities. The president didnt have to say that the lawsuit is a waste of time and money. He let the Republican actions speak for themselves. His comments focused on the opportunity costs behind the Republican decisions to vote dozens of times to repeal the ACA, and file lawsuits.
The key word in the presidents remarks was productive. The one political hurdle that congressional Republicans cant overcome is how unproductive they have been. The president didnt need to treat Boehners lawsuit as a threat to his presidency because it isnt. He also doesnt need to whip up Democratic outrage. Democrats are already livid. President Obama tore apart Speaker Boehners lawsuit in the best way possible. He treated it like the joke it is while pointing out why the Republicans have got to go.
America deserves better than John Boehners breadless circus, and President Obama is making sure that the American people understand that they are getting ripped off by the House Republican sideshow.

(Actually, wasn't Caligula actually supposed to have done that when he was Emperor? He got pissed off when the crowd didn't like the quality of gladiators he was putting in the arena with the lions, so he sent the preatorian guard up into the stands to throw anybody who was booing down into the arena with them? That's pretty much Boehner's circus.)

These two things together would get the people fired up again. If it's not too late. Perhaps we need more new blood like Warren to fire us up and make us believe someone is on our side.

(5,954 posts)I completely support and admire Obama, but holy cow....'haven't been helpful?' They've done far more than just be 'unhelpful.' They have done everything they could possibly do to INFLICT AS MUCH SUFFERING AS POSSIBLE ON AMERICANS in the hopes that Obama and Democrats will get the blame! They've deliberately worked to MAKE AMERICA FAIL while Democrats were in charge so that it would look as bad as it did when Republicans were in charge.
Even Obama's own brother in law said during the 2008 election that "I wish he'd learn how to throw a punch." And yet, having been punched silly for six solid years, he's still playing 'rope a dope?'

I wonder what would happened if president Obama REALLY got angry and was hooting both barrels- after the treatment of 6 years he should have blown a few fuses - and put federal authorities on alert for less - This somewhat of a "Understatement" coming from him I guess
If they had treatmed me like this if I had been the president - Good Lord how I had blown fuses left, center and right - and not holding back of the truth as I saw it, and had not holding anyhing back...
