Tennessee Sex Education Bill Promotes Abstinence-Only, Warns Against 'Gateway Sexual Activity'
Posted: 04/ 8/2012 1:48 pm Updated: 04/ 8/2012 1:48 pm
Tennessee lawmakers added language to the state's abstinence-only sex education curriculum that warns against "gateway sexual activity."
Although Senate Bill 3310 does not specifically define what "gateway sexual activity" comprises, many have interpreted the phrase to include discouragement of anything that has potential to lead to sex -- including kissing, hand-holding and cuddling.
The bill is a response to recent controversies over sex-ed lessons in some Tennessee school districts that mentioned alternatives to sexual intercourse, according to The Tennessean. A 2009 Youth Risk Behavior study found that 61 percent of Memphis City high school and 27 percent of middle school students have had sex -- higher than the national average, according to WMC-TV.
"'Abstinence' means from all of these activities, and we want to promote that," Republican state Sen. Jack Johnson, the bill's sponsor, told The Tennessean. "What we do want to communicate to the kids is that the best choice is abstinence."
The bill would require a "family life education curriculum" that prohibits the promotion of contraception and "any gateway sexual activity or health message that encourages students to experiment with non-coital sexual activity."

class with this opening salvo:
"I know that 1 in 2 of you is already engaging in what is commonly called sexual fornification. So my job is to teach you how to engage without contracting any harmful disease or condition and to decide when you want to have a baby. Because nothing I can say will stop you have having sex."
And lemme tell you, he gave us more information than our parents likely had and he expected us to know all the details. Hard grader. We were expected to know the five most effective forms of birth control (abstinence was a "gimme" and their failure rates. The Coach came right out and told us that Saran Wrap and a rubber band didn't cut it.
Poor deprived children in Tennessee.

(11,366 posts)Because I've already talked to my nearly13-year-old son about contraception and plan to talk to my daughter when she's a little older, as well.
It's sad, though, that the children of bad parents, uneducated parents or parents who simply don't know how to talk to their kids won't learn these things, now.

I'm sure that bill will be the next one this moron sponsors. You just can't be too careful, after all. Think of the children!!

(6,670 posts)The "gateway" concept IN GENERAL - 100 years of being repeatedly discredited, and they just WON'T let go of it.
Asserting that activities that are, in the real world, substitutes for intercourse are somehow LEADING TO intercourse.
Not developing one's sexuality until one's brain stops developing means you pretty much ALWAYS have a stunted sexuality.
Abstinence can easily be statistically demonstrated to be harmful in a large variety of ways, many of which vastly outweigh the risks of pregnancy or incurable disease. Worldwide cults of child molesters are only one possibility.

(5,744 posts)We simply don't get why the idea of people having sex is so upsetting to such large portions of Americans.
We don't get why a modern Western nation propose things like this -and have presidential candidates who are in favor of banning contraception -and have a state (Mississippi) practically outlawing all abortion, etc.
