"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."
--Goering at the Nuremberg Trials
At least that's what I heard on the Sunday morning show.... Here's Peter King from MTP today:
"Every day that goes by, ISIS builds up this caliphate, and it becomes a direct threat to the United States. They are more powerful now than al-Qaeda was on 9-11. So Dick Durbin says we're not going to do this, we're not going to do that. I want to hear what he says when they attack us in the United States."

(21,130 posts)is that the people who were fooled are the ones that are now holding office. Look at Gohmert, Barton, King, Bachmann, Palin, etc. They aren't masterminds, they are the product of the original manipulations, and are now perpetuating it.

(86,577 posts)this is the new paradigm for destroying a democracy, it has been chipping away for a couple decades now, eventually either we or they will succeed. Can't have it both ways.

(3,795 posts)this nation to serve the interests of the majority of its citizens over the interests of the multinational corporations and the financial elite.
The system needs to be revamped, and laws need to be passed. It will take a movement.
Electing better democrats won't do it (although THAT should still be done to ensure less relative harm).

(10,495 posts)return power to the people. Sadly, the people aren't ready to fight. Sure we bitch and moan, but no one is willing to step up and lead the movement. The corporations and the 1% will continue to control the politicians, the media, and through them, the people! We must wait until things get much worse before enough people see through their blaming the poor for our problems.

(19,240 posts)The Kurds are the only people in the Middle East who have an ounce of sense. And no, I am not Kurdish. But there is truth to the saying that mountain people around the world are more similar to each other than they are to their low lan neighbors. The Kurds I know remind me more of my Appalachian relatives than they do of Arabs.
Plus, I hate the Saud tyrants with a passion, and the Sauds are behind every Sunni insurgency, since Sunnis are monarchists who believe that Allah's will must be channeled through a monarch rather than a cleric.
Two excellent reasons to continue bombing ISIS and supply aid to the Kurds. Meanwhile, Iran needs to get off its butt and support the Shias in Iraq.

(15,185 posts)They seem to be the only group interested in building a half way functioning government that has shown they are willing to fight these ISIS sociopaths. I think the Iranians and Turks have to get over this whole opposition to a Kurdish state. How is having a stable country next door more of a threat than the clusterfuck they have on their borders now?

(15,741 posts)lack of health care and shelter right here at home. This is due to the fact that 60-75% of our budget goes to the military.
Now, I'd like to ask you, why are those people on That mountain? What is the root cause? I submit it is our invasion of Iraq, that it is our leap to violence as a solution for every problem.
In my view, we need to fix our hungry and homeless problem here first, we need to tax the wealthy to pay for mor war, and we need to prosecute our own torturers and war criminals (the ones responsible for your refugees on the mountain) before we can be taken seriously when we express moral outrage at the actions of others.
