I doubt it....at least in my life time.

Then again, you cant beat somebody with nobody and Altman is right: the GOP platform no longer meshes with the demographic realities of the country.
As for Altman, while hes arguably concern trolling, the sentiment here is right:
I want to vote Republican because I think that more than one party can propose a viable plan for the countrys future. The idea that policy can take only one direction, corresponding to a single platform or set of beliefs that isnt better served in any way by any other partys platform, speaks more of ideological zealotry that pragmatic realism.
Policy issues are not all black and white or arranged along a single spectrum; they can be multidimensional and require complex solutions.
Though neither party in the United States seems prepared to give the other credit for good ideas, voters can be more discerning. In the last presidential campaign, I preferred a few of Mitt Romneys views on trade and foreign aid to those of Barack Obama. Ive also liked some of what Ive heard on taxes from Rob Portman and immigration from Marco Rubio. I still voted for Obama, though not because I abhorred Romney so much but because I worried about the people who would surround him.

(7,660 posts)unless it is via some other method other than the voter - judicial system or voter suppression.
I am not attracted to anything about the GOP platform. However, I am finding very little differences in the Democratic platforms other than pandering to minority votes. The US foreign policy is terrible and I feel on a path that will lead us to terrible consequences. The left these days has moved so far to the right that it is almost indistinguishable from the GOP.
It will be a long and winding road before we see any difference and I doubt I will experience it in my lifetime. That's OK - I'm 63 and most of my adult life has been a political downward spiral and I've lowered my expectation.... I'm used to it.
I heard someone say today that "Apathy" is our biggest problem these days. The youth not interested in present day affairs. Maybe that is not so bad. It sure beats what my generation (baby boomers) have contributed.

(7,412 posts)I think the most likely scenario is a third party comes along and gains some traction, like 10-15% of the vote. Enough to siphon away from the Democratic candidate and let the GOP win with around 45% of the vote.
I doubt it would be from the left though, most likely would be a Hispanic-rooted third party. If the Right was smart they would start funneling money towards such a thing.

(90,793 posts)They may get the House and Senate both this year unless Dems get off their butts and GOTV. In addition, part of the Bush Cheney legacy is electronic voting machines. We have a long way to go to repair the damage to our system.

(1,850 posts)the Republican party dead as a result of Watergate. Just a couple of years later, Reagan was elected and we "enjoyed" three consecutive terms of Republican rule. Never say never.

(30,481 posts)If not the Democrats would have zero reason to do anything except go even further to the corporate side. I really don't even get the question. It is an endeavor in foolishness. So what, we go from a painful two party system to an even more painful one party system with respect to the Executive Branch. Really?
