The 15 US Cities Where Poverty Is Soaring Fastest

http://www.businessinsider.com/cities-poverty-soaring-2014-8

Southern poverty has grown in an extreme way within America's post-recession landscape, according to a new report from the Brookings Institution.

Of the 15 metro areas where poverty is expanding at the greatest rates, nine are located in the South, with four in North Carolina and another three in Florida.

Metro areas include cities and their surrounding suburbs, where poverty has been expanding fastest.

Hmmm. 4 in NC and 3 in FL. Which party is in control in those states?

3. rate of growth does not equal total number of poor or total percentage of poor

If a place had 1 poor person in 2008 and 2 poor people in 2014, they would have experienced 100% growth in that time frame, making them 2nd on the list.

That's the area closest to Fort Carson, Peterson AFB and NORAD. Lots of off base rentals and post-service settlement/transition.

It's also the section of the city with the most reliable and wide-spread public transit (not that there's much) and is most compact in terms of walkability.

Rising poverty doesn't actually surprise me -- the city has been disinvesting in it's own population and infrastructure for years, has been in financial trouble for over a decade, and is one of the exit bases for the Army.

The rising child poverty in the state as a whole is the bigger worry, since that points to a bigger structural issue and rising income disparity (though anyone who lives here knows that already.)

I don't live in any of the cities mentioned. We come to Colorado Springs as much as possible, love it, always have. Would never have guessed it would be on that list.

Pick a portion of any city and I'm sure anywhere can be shown to belong on that list.

So many folks still hurting. Doesn't seem like it's going to get better for those folks anytime soon.

There is a map of the US at this page that shows that California and NC are not far apart in child economic well-being.

This report is an eye-opener.

all controlled by team GOP, since they are such job creators. I guess Democratic regulations are destroying the economies of only red states, because Democrats are so evil like that. Obama has really screwed these few red states.
