Noodle dishes increased the risk of developing cardiometabolic syndrome
This in turn raises risk of heart disease, diabetes and stroke
Risk of conditions seen in those eating noodles two or three times a week
Women are particularly at risk, say the U.S. researchers
From a cheap student staple to a pricey bowl of broth, noodle dishes are soaring in popularity.
But they could also wreak havoc with your health, a new study warns.
U.S. scientists found people who ate noodle dishes two to three times a week - including the Japanese noodle soup dish ramen - had an increased risk of developing cardiometabolic syndrome.
This, in turn, raises a persons likelihood of developing heart disease and other conditions, such as diabetes and stroke.
The findings, published in The Journal of Nutrition, could shed new light on the risks of a worldwide dietary habit, said lead study author Hyun Joon Shin.
Dr Shin, who led the study on behalf of the Baylor Heart and Vascular Hospital, in Texas, said instant noodles and ramen appeared to be particularly damaging to women's health.

(14,733 posts)2-3 times a week? More like 7-14 times a week. At anywhere from 6-10 for a dollar back then, it was what you can afford when times are lean. Water, salt, seasoning, and cheap as all get out noodles.

(16,844 posts)I'm still poor, but I don't eat ramen noodles no matter how broke I am. I'll do without first.

(14,449 posts)will have that much affect on students in the future. If they eat it for 30 years then maybe it will increase the health risks. College students are so active that even the salt will sweat out of their systems. Another story to try and get college students to buy more expensive food as if they have discretionary income somewhere. The media is so irresponsible.

(21,675 posts)But to be honest, I do use a lot of salt, and have low normal BP. In my case, I feel it was the carbs, but this product hits many levels, none of them good.

(14,691 posts)tofu? That's not the same as ramen noodles. Also the ramen noodles come with a package of salt laden "seasoning" that's full of unhealthy stuff.
