Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDid Romney pressure the Mormon Church to change their official stance on post-humous baptisms?
It is a shameful practice that needed to be changed, but the timing of the change (in the middle of an election year) is very suspicious, and I doubt the policy would have been changed if Romney was not the front runner.
Is it troubling to anyone else that Romney has so much influence on the Church, and vice versa? It seems like they're bending over backwards to make sure Romney is elected, with all their commercials showing how great it is to be Mormon, to now changing their platform to accommodate Willard. What gives? What will they gain if he is president?

(36,063 posts)it wasn't done in 'Wards,' which are roughly like a local parish.
Have they moved vicarious baptism out of the Temples and into local meeting houses or are you saying that temple-going church members from some wards are more likely to do this?

(15,667 posts)Actually I would feel better about Romney if he COULD tell them what to do -- but from what I understand he believes 100% in the LDS doctrine and has participated in the dead baptism and everything else they say. If the LDS prez has a "revelation" and gets on the horn to Prez Romney, well, that's the guy who would really be in charge, IMO. Did you read the Salon article where the guys in Romney's BYU fraternity used to say he was going to be the first LDS President....creepy.

(23,720 posts)My worry isn't him influencing the church, but the church influencing him as President. Mormons have some strange beliefs and I would hate to have any of that imposed upon me by a President that can't set aside his religion to lead the country.
