Missouri State Senator Gassed at Ferguson Protest

http://www.businessinsider.com/missouri-state-senator-gassed-while-protesting-in-ferguson-2014-8

"During a press conference on Wednesday, a Missouri state senator claimed she was hit with tear gas while protesting peacefully in Ferguson, the St. Louis suburb that has erupted with rioting this week after the police shooting of an unarmed teenager.

When Maria Chappelle-Nadal asked if she would be gassed again like she was on Monday, Ferguson's police chief Thomas Jackson kept a stoic expression until he found out she was a state senator:"

By all means, let's elect people so our cops can gas them.

America. Fuck Yeah!

If more officials did the same, protesting might be safer.

The right to petition government for redress of grievances is the right to make a complaint to, or seek the assistance of, one's government, without fear of punishment or reprisals. The Article 44 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union ensures the right to petition to the European Parliament.[1] The right can be traced back to the Bill of Rights 1689, the Petition of Right (1628), and the Magna Carta (1215).

Please let that sink in:

Fucking King John, mocked in the tales of Robin Hood, agreed to this in 1215 c.e. But, whenever a significant number of USians try it, government moves in, even on the Bonus Army.

draw a sizeable crowd, be it a St. Pat's Day parade or a protest. You may need to close streets and re-direct traffic, for example, and that requires advance notice, notice that is given when people apply for a permit.

Withholding permits in a discriminatory way is something else. So is landing demonstrators in the hospital, trashing their belongings without warning, etc.

No one did soulful and bittersweet, sad and yet transcendent songs like Jerry.. But that tune in particular he inhabited.

And he chose Vine of all video services to post it. Here was a perfect opportunity to highlight the gross incompetence and belligerence of the Ferguson PD's handling of the shooting and its whitewashing, and this jackass decides to wreck it because Vine is just so hip and trendy with its 7 second format.

I dont really use vine, either, but then I'm also older than something like 2/3 of the planet, at this point- as fucked up as that may be for me to think about.

If it gets more people aware of the situation, who cares if it comes with a handlebar mustache and a can of PBR? Hip and trendy is beside the point.

I don't really give 2 shits about Vine. I DO give a shit about how the video poster's choice to use this format cut away important parts of context. The Kennedy assassination in a 7 second clip? Moon landing in a 7 second clip? The agonizingly-slow destruction of the Twin Towers reduced to 7 seconds? The Rodney King beating reduced to 7 seconds? Any number of Civil Rights Era videos reduced to 7 seconds? 7 seconds might be appropriate for campaign ads and animals sneezing, but for newsworthy events like a state senator exposing the gross incompetence/violent belligerence of a racist police force in a podunk Missouri town, her confronting that man deserved more respect than 7 seconds allows.

when the crux here is the message.

I doubt anyone is going to be less aware of what went down because it went out on vine. Some people who wouldn't have seen any of it will likely be motivated to dig deeper into the story.

It's like twitter- sure, compressing communication into 149 characters is a bit inane; but there is a strange sort of logic to it, and even if there isn't, might as well go argue with the ocean tides.

ordered out by the governor because of a disaster.

The retired soldiers, and soldier wannabes, are police officers. They are to be respected, when they've earned it, but they should not be given the "arms of war" to kill Americans!
