1. What is funny about that photo: I made it, and I have no idea how it managed to spread!

I made it in MS Paint (hence the poor-quality circles around the text) out of two separate photos, and posted it on an old social media site that was comprised of mostly Bay Area people. Nobody ever commented on it or anything. Fast-forward to 2014, and this is the 2nd time I've seen it on DU.

Small world indeed!!

5. There's "looting" and then there's "looting."

In case of a national emergency it's not looting in my book if people have to collect food and supplies in order to survive.

However, I was having a discussion last night with someone who felt that looting was an acceptable practice in order to bring on a desired result, like demanding the arrest of the man who killed Michael Brown. I felt it would have limited effect and the reason I feel that way is because the most effective manner to draw attention to a cause is a selfless act. That's why the immolation of Buddhist priest attracts the most attention. And why marching in large numbers demands attention. But looting is not a selfless act.

This is about how 'crime' is regarded when it comes to whites and non-whites.

6. Remember it?

I lived through it. It was hard to watch and electricity and time online were a luxury. I slept in fear of roving gangs with no police to call. Race for us wasn't an issue, it was anarchy and martial law. But, of course, racial bias in the media continued unabated...nice graphic, arcane1.
