...to the verdict that 6 Florida idiots perpetrated on us in the Zimmerman trial. Since then, I cringe whenever my son leaves the house.

My wife and I have told him what to do if confronted by police, ask for us and say NOTHING until we get there. We've also told him not to say that dad is white. That can be a surprise for them.

Our next door neighbors, who are black, have two sons that are in their teens now. We've known them since they were born and love them to pieces. Every time one of these incidents happens I think of them and worry that some day we'll get that news. 
We don't care as long as it helps keep him alive. Here in Winthrop, Maine, I don't know think that racism is a big issue. However, my wife and I also know that there are a lot of parents out there who've lost their kids who believed exactly as we did. We only breathe easily when he walks back through the door.
We're strict with him because we know that if he were out with some of his friends and they get rambunctious as boys may do (very innocently), many people will look at the friends and say "boys will be boys" and call my son the N word with the next breath. Unfortunately, President Obama's 2 victories seem to have only given racists the sick idea that bigotry became MORE acceptable. I think that my wife and I will worry about him every day until we die! Our son is a great kid and we couldn't imagine a better son. We are so proud of the man he's becoming. A racist who sees George Zimmerman as a role model will only see the n****r with a target sign on him courtesy of a stupid Florida jury and Fox "News" BS.

When the kids here have their friends--of all colors--over to play basketball or just hang out, I hear them joking around. Ragging on each other, getting what I call 'puffed up' like young boys do to show off for each other. I know it for what it is, but as you say someone else might think 'thugs' or 'gangsters' etc.
I'm sitting by the window and just after I posted above, watched one of the boys get into his car and drive off. I know what a great kid he is, but all it will take is him being in the wrong place at the wrong time, or making an innocent smart ass remark to the wrong person for a disaster to happen because too many people are still racist or only see stereotypes.
