Modesto police get OK to use traffic intersection cameras for investigations

For 17 years, Modesto’s Public Works Department has used mounted cameras to monitor the flow of traffic and make adjustments to signal timing. For the first time, the Modesto Police Department has the capability to tap into those cameras to help solve crimes and investigate accidents.

The City Council last month approved the purchase of equipment that will record the feeds of the city’s 37 traffic cameras and give access through an Internet-based system for viewing. Chief Galen Carroll said the Police Department has the equipment and expects it will be up and running in 30 to 60 days.

... The servers will hold about a month’s worth of video. Incidents would have had to occur in one of the 29 major intersections where the cameras are mounted. The feeds generally provide only one perspective.

The traffic cameras are not the large, boxy cameras mounted on poles at some intersections. Those cameras catch red-light violators, who get tickets in the mail. The smaller traffic cameras sit atop traffic signal mast arms.

1. If some citizen has a minor fender bender,

will they themselves be able to request the relevant video, or is this only for the cops' exclusive use?
