The president of the United States has awesome powers and responsibilities. But being a superhero is not one of them. But you wouldnt know that by listening to those demanding that President Obama do all sorts of questionable things in response to the tumult over the police killing of Michael Brown. They want Obama to act out in some visceral way. They want more emotion from him on the horrible actions in and images coming out of Ferguson, Missouri. They just want him to do something. All the while completely ignoring what hes actually doing, what he actually can do and what he is actually capable of doing.

White House officials tell me that personnel from the Department of Justices community relations service arrived in Ferguson on Aug. 10, the day after Officer Darren Wilson shot and killed Brown. The level of attention has only ratcheted up from there. DOJ is conducting its own parallel federal investigation. FBI agents swarmed Ferguson over the weekend. A third autopsy of Browns body conducted by the federal government was done yesterday. Holder will be in Ferguson on Wednesday to meet with federal investigators and prosecutors. In an op-ed in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch released late Tuesday afternoon, Holder writes, At a time when so much may seem uncertain, the people of Ferguson can have confidence that the Justice Department intends to learn in a fair and thorough manner exactly what happened. The attorney general is appointed by the president. Holders travel to Missouri, the op-ed and everything DOJ is doing no doubt has the blessing of Obama.
Because of the ongoing investigation the last thing anyone should want is for the president to be rhetorically reckless in talking about the police killing of Michael Brown. Remember what happened the last time he talked about police action involving an African American man? Some said he was the one who acted stupidly in commenting at all on the arrest of Harvard law professor Henry Louis Gates at his own home in 2009. That being said, Obama has neither been silent on nor disengaged from whats happening in Ferguson.

Obama cares. Deeply. But if youre expecting him to do seemingly heroic and showy things that make you feel good but do nothing to actually fix big, systemic problems in the long-term you will never be satisfied. And to demand that he do so in light of the information void out of Ferguson is foolish. All the energy being used to harangue the president should be directed at officials in Ferguson and St. Louis County who have refused to release key documents in the case. Why havent they released the first autopsy of Michael Brown? Or Ferguson Police Report #2014-12391? Or St. Louis County Police Report #2014-43984?

Again. THIS IS NOT ABOUT YOU! Let's all take a deep breath AND ACTUALLY FIX THIS!

(65,616 posts)Eric Holder and the FBI are THERE and running an investigation to find out what is going on! What the fuck more does the man have to do?
The GOP would NEVER have even bothered investigating!
NEVER.

(83,758 posts)There is venom towards this President that I find appalling. Sure we have the GOP. Yet here on DU! WTF!
If I listened to DU, I would never have voted for the man a second time. Lucky for me I have a functioning brain and use it.
If people here believe this President doesn't care about Ferguson, then they haven't been watching.
Damn the haters.

(65,616 posts)I didn't really believe liberals/moderates would be like that toward the man that basically kept us out of WWIII. Maybe I've lost it, but these last few years Obama has stood out as an extraordinary POTUS, much better then any in modern times...turned into a true statesman IMO over the last 4 years.
Don't feel bad, you and I know Obama probably can't STOP thinking about what is going on...he sent the head of the DoJ there fer christsake and it is OBVIOUS (despite media distortion) they are going to swing the big hammer if it comes down to it.
Obama has a very humanitarian side and is always fast at coming up with great answers...yet now he has to wait for his AG to do his JOB. It is not the POTUSes JOB to run the FBI...but I guess people want him to do THAT too!
I guess what has really gotten to me is that I feel like he is the ONLY person running our federal government! Congress...what can be said about them that hasn't been said...the SCOTUS is too busy racking up points with various political/corporate factions.
The POTUS is supposed to get help from the other branches in running things...yet it feels like everything rests on his shoulders. All the time.
FUCK the haters.
I'm staying away from the M$M...

Yes, he is doing all the jobs, Senate. House. Governor. FBI. and the list goes on because there is NO ONE TO SUPPORT HIM. Not there and not many here. Nothing. Nothing is ever good enough and it never will be.
I agree with you Fuck the haters. No one can ever make me believe that most of this is not Racist. It is.
Yes, best POTUS ever.
Justice for Michael Brown and our President and our AG Holder for doing his best to make it happen

I'm not saying that the criticisms are all justified - certainly, those from the right are just insane/evil. But Obama's made his bed, now he gets to sleep in it.

(1,370 posts)Obama has shown little interest in the populist ideals he campaigned on. He became the moderate Republican he was hoping to compromise with while the Republicans shifted even further to the right. He turned his back on the people who would've had his back... . Politically he did make his bed, but I feel bad about the racist hatred he's had to endure from the right.

he deserves hate for a lot of other things . but nobody deserves racism.
Good for you raindaddy!
Another Obama sucks post. Kudos to you! When have you taken his back here? You have been here since 2003...care to link all those OPs to me.

(1,370 posts)I'm a traditional Democrat..I believe in transparency, unions, trade agreement that protect middle-class jobs, prosecution of Wall Street criminals, and protecting the rights of whistle blowers. I don't believe in Bush's tax cuts for billionaires, appointing Wall Street and corporate insiders to positions of oversight, illegal spying on my fellow citizens, endless corporate cash buying our Representatives, etc...
When I vote for a Democrat I expect an advocate, someone who shares these ideals and is willing to fight for them.

(83,758 posts)And this...
It's not about him being a coward, not caring, or any of what he's been accused. It's about caring for the victim and his family enough to not have his words used to allow the shooter to escape justice.
His tough talk taken out of context hurt a victim.* Is that not a higher goal than satistfying voyeurs on the net demanding to see him rip into Ferguson PD and the shooter?
Is that cheap thrill worth letting Michael Brown and his community suffer by letting the defense use his words to establish undue influence to free Wilson?
Most of us know damn well that they will. This is a disgrace to talk about a man who is trying to get the best thing done, not go for the political win in the short run and lose the bigger goal of justice.
Brava freshwest, that was perfect.

(297,220 posts)Precisely, she.. this is what makes me so Pissed at those who get on the internet and whine about the President not doing what they MOFO want him to do right now.. because they know nothing about what it takes to get Justice for Michael Brown. All they know is the President isn't doing it fast enough or loud enough to suit their arrogant ego.

(34,857 posts)I think part of it is because of the long, dark shadow we came out of in 2009. But still, in 1980, there were worse riots in Miami over a very similar event (cops were acquitted of killing a black man). It took Carter weeks to comment on it and only visited the area after everything was calmed. When he did, his limo was pelted by angry Liberty City residents.
Obama is walking a tight rope and doing it about as well as he can.

(297,220 posts)The students he interacted with, Chief Ron Johnson, and Professor Wesley Bell all had gratitude that he was there and felt encouraged. Said he was inspiring and realistic.
Chief Ron Johnson said Holder's coming to Ferguson had great impact on people. Prof Bell asked if people understood how different this is.. to receive this much Presidential attention?! "It's unprecedented"!
The students said Holder was listening to them.. and the police shifted tactics last night.. because Holder was there or a coincidence?
If you have the time.. here's the link. I hope it's better for you.. it buffered for me about a million times but I stuck with it because I wanted to know. L O'D also eviscerated the NYT "police report" that I heard for the first time watching his show. It was carrying the FPD heavy water and Lawrence tore it in shreds by pointing out the many bogus fallacies.

Since the Aug. 9 shooting death of Michael Brown, the nation and the world have witnessed the unrest that has gripped Ferguson, Mo. At the core of these demonstrations is a demand for answers about the circumstances of this young mans death and a broader concern about the state of our criminal justice system.
At a time when so much may seem uncertain, the people of Ferguson can have confidence that the Justice Department intends to learn in a fair and thorough manner exactly what happened.
Today, I will be in Ferguson to be briefed on the federal civil rights investigation that I have closely monitored since I launched it more than one week ago. I will meet personally with community leaders, FBI investigators and federal prosecutors from the Justice Departments Civil Rights Division and the U.S. Attorneys Office to receive detailed briefings on the status of this case.
