How do I know these "Ice bucket" stunts are real?

I guess the donation to charity is the bottom line, but I wonder how many get luke-warm water dumped on their heads just to get their face in the news.

I just saw a clip of Mitt Romney accepting the challenge and he didn't even flinch, barely even a little. He picked right up with his narration with the water still streaming off his face. No ice cubes were visible to my eye, and I doubt he can suffer ice water submersion without his mouth and eyes opening wide in shock. He doesn't have a reputation for being a bad ass. He's known as a refined flim flam artist and I suspect this is just his latest scam.

There have been several others I found suspicious recently as well. I believe the IBC has gone from rounding up donations to a charity to a vehicle for the media starved celebrity. I'm guessing it's officially run it's course as of today.

I didn't see any ice either, and based on his reaction, assumed the water wasn't actually ice-cold. I think the ones you can guess are real involve being able to actually see both ice and water coming out, and people at the very least giving one good flinch, if not reacting even more strongly. You could 'cheat' as it appears Romney might have, by simply using warm water, or going to the other extreme, and using a bucket full of ice, with no real water in it, so that the ice merely bounces off of you - I think I saw one like that among the various vids I've seen.

I liked Steve Kornacki's bucket of Vanilla Ice photos, though, and he said he'd be donating $440 ($5 per photo) since he didn't want to get wet.

Not only did he dress up in a suit, but he put ice into the water, and then waited 30 minutes so that the water was actually ice cold. The idea is that the immediate reaction of the body after being doused with ice water is akin to what ASL sufferers feel. It can in fact be hazardous to vulnerable groups, so pregnant Zoe Saldana had her husband do it to avoid the miscarriage risk.

A lot of celebrities just chuck ice cubes on themselves, and then rattle off some names, without giving information about where people can donate - which is the main point of the whole thing.

27 year old Cory Griffin, a junior exec at Bain Capital, drowned when he leaped from the roof of a building into the ocean off Nantucket over the weekend. If he was working on a new challenge, I don't think it'll catch on.

You may be onto something, though. I've received three icebucket challenges, and the video posted by one challenger looked suspiciously devoid of ice cubes. I'm thinking civil suit. How would you rate my chances?
