For sale: Systems that can secretly track where cellphone users go around the globe

Makers of surveillance systems are offering governments across the world the ability to track the movements of almost anybody who carries a cellphone, whether they are blocks away or on another continent.

The technology works by exploiting an essential fact of all cellular networks: They must keep detailed, up-to-the-minute records on the locations of their customers to deliver calls and other services to them. Surveillance systems are secretly collecting these records to map people’s travels over days, weeks or longer, according to company marketing documents and experts in surveillance technology.

The world’s most powerful intelligence services, such as the National Security Agency and Britain’s GCHQ, long have used cellphone data to track targets around the globe. But experts say these new systems allow less technically advanced governments to track people in any nation — including the United States — with relative ease and precision.

Users of such technology type a phone number into a computer portal, which then collects information from the location databases maintained by cellular carriers, company documents show. In this way, the surveillance system learns which cell tower a target is currently using, revealing his or her location to within a few blocks in an urban area or a few miles in a rural one.

uses this all the time. When I go on a trip or I'm getting too many crank calls, I turn my phone off and wrap my phone in aluminum foil for the trip and they are completely lost while I'm away. I have broken the chain of crank calls many time this way. Remember, when your phone is off... it's not really off. That's why you have to wrap it. They can't track you if you disappear and once they loose the signal they can't get it back till they find you again. It's annoying but satisfying that you can screw their scam.

or threats over non-existent health care expenses. It's a big con going around out of Fla. Here's a couple... 409.123-4567, 803.272.7455, 786.480.0065 ... I have a list of them. You can google them to get details.

Many are sales and most are aggressive.

Did a segment on that subject last night.
Those cell phones are veritable tracking devices that show some where you are at all times,in fact your entire behaviour is monitored everytime you go online as to where you go and what you may buy online is data thats collected by dozens of companies.

But don't worry, all governments will be glad to tell us how this new device won't infringe upon our liberties and is really there to keep us safe

Because you don't own the field, the corporations have always owned them. Yay, capitalism!

And the government was always able to subpoena this data. Hooray for staying connected 24/7.

Now, who is going to set up a network that doesn't have this built into it to function?

Won't hold my breath on that solution. And for our friend Agent Mike.
