The problem that the US is facing in Iraq and Syria, why Obama claims that he has "no strategy yet", is that the only effective strategy is a pivot toward Assad and Iran. This is a Voldemort option, it is politically unspeakable. And yet it is the obvious path to contain Isis, and to perhaps defeat Isis. The administration cannot make any moves in this direction now, as it will risk losing the fall election over the political blowback. Perhaps in November reality will overwhelm other considerations.

(102,351 posts)Our "buddies", the Saudis, have certainly been of no help that's for sure, but won't they go apeshit if we make any overtures towards Iran.... Of course our little adventure in Iraq has already basically given Iran's Shiiites the toehold they might never have had without us. So, it seems we are already "aligned", whether inadvertent or not.

(25,704 posts)Iran is the long term greatest enemy of Isreal. They are a smart, sophisticated people. IMO, it is in Isreal's interest in either having peaceable neighbors, which is not going to happen, or weakened neighbors, which an arab v persian bloodbath creates. The Levantine War is weakening Syria and Hezzbollah, the toughest enemies of Isreal. Both are Iranian client states. All it took is the importation of 1000 Chechen screamers. Who knew?
The dare not speak it's name part is whether or not American Jews use their positions in government, education and media to influence American policy to Isreal. They do because such a thing is perfectly natural. It is not a plot or somerhing sinister. And of course American Jews are Americans first.
The Middle East is not going to change because their culture won't change. No one is going to stop them from marrying their cousins, which increases insularity and lessens national feeling.
