Rams Cut Sam

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/08/30/michael-sam-cut-rams_n_5739774.html

Michael Sam, the first openly gay athlete drafted into the NFL, was cut by the St. Louis Rams as the team trimmed its roster ahead of the start of the 2014 season, according to multiple reports. The news emerged on Saturday shortly before the NFL's 4 p.m. ET deadline to finalize rosters and trim them down to 53 players.

He treated Sam just like he would treat any other 7th round draft pick.........He gave him an opportunity to make the team.........He couldn't........Now other teams have video and evaluation of what he could do, and he can try to get on other teams.

that's a bit off-base. He said Sam was definitely capable playing in the NFL.

It was a cut based on simple numbers...the Rams have a strong D-line group (pretty much the only thing they have going for them) and with limited roster spots he had to go with the guy who could play on special teams for a 9th defensive lineman. That far down the depth chart, those are the only snaps of game-action a player is likely to see. If nobody else signs him, he will certainly be getting a spot on the practice squad and a chance to play/practice his way onto the roster as a mid-season injury-replacement.

I respect the guy for the * he had to suffer through those last years in Houston. I was pulling for him in that Super Bowl. He talked Sam up which is not usual for a guy you are slipping onto the practice squad.

when the Rams drafted this young man and treated him like every other player. I'm a St. Louis resident and have never really been much of a Rams fan. I've always seen them as a Cali reject team playing here. Their treatment of Sam has made me rethink that.

He's a confirmed jerk because he cut Sam?
One might say that of you, considering the high praise Fisher has had and has for Sam.

He's almost certain to make either the Rams' practice squad or be picked up by another team.

but the Rams do have an exceptional defensive line. I suspect he won't be out of a job long given the way the NFL season goes, injury-wise. If you can rush the QB effectively you will find work.

Sam was one of those "tweeners" -- a little small for DE and too slow for OLB. Basically, he is a situation pass rusher it seems. Jeff Fisher gave him a shot, and like you said, he could still make the PQ or be picked up by someone needing help at DE.

A year on the practice squad will help. 25 lbs on his hauches and ass to hold up his end.

He has a skill and knack to get to the qb. Not fast enough to play un space in a 3 4. He is a 4 3 end. But too small.

If he wants to go through the transformation he has the instincts to become Ted Washington. Not sure if his frane could take 75 to 100 more pounds.

All in all, he is going to land on his feet. I had to give up my nfl dreams in 5rh grade, since I sucked. He he seems like a smart chap.

And that can be good enough, in some cases. Not in his case, I'm afraid. He's a Rudy with more talent, just not quite enough more talent.

I feel so sorry for him. I have a young friend who's an excellent soccer player but was not picked by any team. For the last three years he's been absolutely lost, having based his whole future on doing what he loves and having very little to fall back on.
I hope Michael Sam has something more solid to rely on.

All NFL players do, some earlier than others - average career is only three years. I'm guessing he'll wind up being an analyst, commentary or perhaps do similar work maybe in entertainment field?
He's appears to be a talented guy if not a full-fledged NFL talent.
