It's important to understand that this type of thing is going to be happening from now on. They see the imbalance in women, so they'll take some kind of statement, by someone, and latch on to it. They'll demagogue it, they'll report inaccurately about it.
Let's break what she said down. She said she'd never had a job, outside of the family. Ann came back and talked about raising 5 boys, how hard it was.
The media is doing what it always does, trying to even the race, to make it close, to make it a race, perhaps even trying to hand it to republicans, or make it close enough to steal. Gore knows that is true, as they took stupid, insignificant stuff, and blew it tremendously out of proportion.
Here are the poignant things about the story. Ann claims to have done all the raising of the children. The idea is that she's painting this false equivalence with all other women. In truth though, she's had nannies, maids, drivers, and servants to help with all of the things these other women have NOT had. So there is no real equivalence with this millionaire who drives two caddies, who has the best equipment, who has wanted for nothing in her life materially, and ordinary women, who struggle for enough income, for enough time, to put enough effort into working AND raising their children. No one said it wasn't a hard thing to raise children. With all of the normal challenges most women put up with, it's a tremendous challenge. The point is, Ann had all the help and money she needed, which puts her into an very small, vertical group of privileged people.
On an aside, one of Ann's nannies (for her, not her kids) called in, and talked of how her parents lived in privilege, never wanting for anything, how she did all the work, she helped raise Ann. I'm sure Ann had everything too, for her 5 children, and I doubt she can imagine how hard it is for people who don't have money, who either take the bus, or have a car that is smoking and about to break down, to get things fixed, to do everything manually, to risk walking through crime plagued neighborhoods.
It kind of pisses me off that they make this false equivalence, and compare her life to women who really struggle. But it's what they do, republicans and their media. It's going to happen more and more as the election continues, as they are going to desperately try to even up a lop-sided race, that should stay lop-sided. But a lot of money is going to be put into evening it up, so just be prepared.
