Axelrod To CNN: “She actually is your employee, not ours”

Chief Obama strategist David Axelrod spoke with CNN’s John King Thursday and distanced the campaign from Hilary Rosen‘s controversial comments that Ann Romney had not worked a day in her life. “She actually is your employee, not ours,” Axelrod told King. “She works for CNN. I think CNN would not allow her to be an operative for our campaign.”

11. Important
Fri Apr 13, 2012, 11:33 AM

It's important to understand that this type of thing is going to be happening from now on. They see the imbalance in women, so they'll take some kind of statement, by someone, and latch on to it. They'll demagogue it, they'll report inaccurately about it.

Let's break what she said down. She said she'd never had a job, outside of the family. Ann came back and talked about raising 5 boys, how hard it was.

The media is doing what it always does, trying to even the race, to make it close, to make it a race, perhaps even trying to hand it to republicans, or make it close enough to steal. Gore knows that is true, as they took stupid, insignificant stuff, and blew it tremendously out of proportion.

Here are the poignant things about the story. Ann claims to have done all the raising of the children. The idea is that she's painting this false equivalence with all other women. In truth though, she's had nannies, maids, drivers, and servants to help with all of the things these other women have NOT had. So there is no real equivalence with this millionaire who drives two caddies, who has the best equipment, who has wanted for nothing in her life materially, and ordinary women, who struggle for enough income, for enough time, to put enough effort into working AND raising their children. No one said it wasn't a hard thing to raise children. With all of the normal challenges most women put up with, it's a tremendous challenge. The point is, Ann had all the help and money she needed, which puts her into an very small, vertical group of privileged people.

On an aside, one of Ann's nannies (for her, not her kids) called in, and talked of how her parents lived in privilege, never wanting for anything, how she did all the work, she helped raise Ann. I'm sure Ann had everything too, for her 5 children, and I doubt she can imagine how hard it is for people who don't have money, who either take the bus, or have a car that is smoking and about to break down, to get things fixed, to do everything manually, to risk walking through crime plagued neighborhoods.

It kind of pisses me off that they make this false equivalence, and compare her life to women who really struggle. But it's what they do, republicans and their media. It's going to happen more and more as the election continues, as they are going to desperately try to even up a lop-sided race, that should stay lop-sided. But a lot of money is going to be put into evening it up, so just be prepared.

i worked for 20 yrs. got married and stayed home with the kids. stopping my advancement in career. little kids kick a parents ass in work. so much harder than going to work. and now kids teens, my job is a piece of cake. looking for a job, 18 yrs out of job market leaves me fucked.

so i am a defender of all the issues for women on all the sides.

2. King asked Axelrod why Rosen’s comments were such a big deal that Obama and Biden condemned it
Fri Apr 13, 2012, 10:57 AM
Apr 2012

“I don’t know in the long term whether it will be a big deal,” Axelrod replied. “It was an unfortunate comment, unfortunate for two reasons. In the battle of politics, family are civilians and should be treated as such. They shouldn’t be pulled into the debate in that kind of way as targets. So it was unfortunate from that respect. The other thing is that it did feel like denigration of stay-at-home moms. There are moms that are working that would like to be home and to suggest that you are not working if your staying home, raising a family, often active in the schools and the community and causes, that’s not right. My own wife was a stay-at-home mom and worked harder than anybody I know. Often, the moms are the ones who are handling the family finances as well. It was an unfortunate comment. Hillary has acknowledged that. It is true that the Romney campaign jumped on it like a raft in the deep blue sea. They were drowning under the weight of their own problems. Earlier in the day they couldn’t come up with an answer of whether Governor Romney supported the pay equity law, the first law the President signed and he endorsed and warmly spoke of Governor Walker who just repealed the pay equity law there. I think that has more durable meaning to the women of this country than this,”

“Why so fast to trash, forgive me, my word, not yours, somebody who is a trusted ally of the White House who has been out there defending the President quite a bit?” King countered.

“I think we have an obligation in politics and public life, when someone, even friends, say things that are inappropriate to say so. In certain ways, when your friends say it, there is more of an obligation to do so. I think that’s true on both sides. I’ve been disappointed on the other side of the aisle just recently when Governor Romney and others were not willing to stand up and denounce speech they felt that most people would call inappropriate. I thought we had an obligation to speak and speak very, very quickly to make clear that this didn’t reflect our point of view and that we thought Hilary hould apologize. She did do that. The other thing that we should clear up is that she actually is your employee, not ours. She works for CNN. I think CNN would not allow her to be an operative for our campaign. She is not. She never has been. She is a supporter of the President. The Romney campaign has throughout the day portrayed her as an advisor to the president. That’s simply not true.”

What a fucking insult and did any one say one fucking word about it?! Nope. Truly vile. Sure the media is liberal. Just like everything in the TV media, it gets traction because it is an emotional debate that's free of facts. It's not complicated and you don't have to explain it. You just feel it in your gut and have a loud, emotional response. And frankly, I think most women have moved past the debate. Most see that you should make the best choice for you -- I think the only thing at issue is that you shouldn't be criticized for your choice, whatever that is.

Here's how Obama can turn it in his favor: Agree that all moms work and it is an important job. Say that he would like all women and families to have that choice. Show that the GOP policies -- antiworker, low wage, anti union -- are actually forcing women to join the workforce to help support their families, even if they would rather stay home. They need to work just to support their families because wages are too low and health insurance costs so high. He would like all women to have the same choices as Ann Romney. All wages -- male or female -- should be sufficient to provide minimal standards for a family, so one parent can stay home if that is best for the family. The GOP's policies will force more women to work so that families can have food, shelter, medical care. The Democrats' policies are pro-choice and pro-family.

Can we hold Romney personally accountable for every stupid utterance of a Republican operative, and stovepipe it onto the Romney campaign if a knee-jerk disavowal doesn't materialize by the next news cycle? Because Republicans are saying a *lot* of stupid, offensive shit, far worse than the factual characterization by Rosen that Ann Romney has never had to work a day in her pampered life.

Side note to the Romneys. You're wealthy. Exceedingly so. You have more money than any 10 families, even 100 families, have at their disposal. For the love of all that's good and decent in the world: Shut. The. Fuck. Up about being "regular folks." you don't have any understanding whatsoever of what it means to run out of money before you run out of month. You don't know what it means to have a sick child and wonder if getting into work late today is the final straw for your psycho boss, and you get fired. You've never, ever wondered if you can make a can of tuna stretch to a third day's worth of meals. As far as understanding the problems faced by most people in the country, you don't know what you're talking about. Please, just shut up.

"Senior Political Analyst" Bill Schneider, Wolf Blitzer, Candy Crowley, most of the ones who get the most air time, are big Republican supporters.

The ONLY non-Republicans I met from that network were Myron Kandel (now retired financial chief, and a wonderful guy) and Roland Martin (very much NOT retired LOL). Ted Turner would probably barf at what has become of what he created. When I hear Blitzer and Crowley, I come close to doing that myself.

I don't know Hilary Rosen she may be perfectly loyal but she works for the corporate media and is paid by them.

The corporate media creates a meme to offset or obfuscate an obvious Democratic advantage over Republicans re: women's issues when the Democrats distance themselves from that corporate media induced adverse meme, the corporate media criticizes the Democrats.

Of course HIlary did apologize, it's too bad her employers couldn't be so gracious, but perhaps that's because they want the meme to stick, so the drowning Republicans can have a life raft to cling to.

In short, the corporate media is the corporate media.

Thanks for the thread, kpete.

If that is so, get her to produce say five W2s that her employer(s) issued her for tax purposes.

Also get her to produce the Social Security Administration report that show the years worked and the earnings eligible to be counted for SS benefits.

Mine shows my first year as 1964 and my last 2010 and all the years in between.

Any bets that she can produce either or both?
