Cold weather will soon be upon us so this is the time to think about those who are without warm clothing and coats. I'd like to bring your attention to an organization dedicated to providing coats to men, women and children in need. Many thanks to any and all who can help!

from their website....
About One Warm Coat
Our organization started in 1992 with a Thanksgiving weekend coat drive at one location in San Francisco.
Since then, we have welcomed thousands of groups across North America, who joined their efforts to ours with the same goal:
Collect coats to give to those in need, free of charge.
We
◾Develop and nurture the volunteer spirit in caring people everywhere.
◾Make it easy to help those in need in local communities.
◾Provide tools and resources to help volunteers organize coat drives, publicize their events and connect with local Agencies to distribute donated coats.
About Our Volunteers and Agency Friends
Together, we have given away close to 4 million coats so far!
Many people join together to work toward our goal:
◾Donors clean out their closets and give their coats.
◾Volunteer leaders organize coat drives and collect coats in their home towns.
◾Social service agency volunteers and staff distribute the coats to those in need.
◾Sponsors help us get the word out in cities across the country.
Our dream: That One Warm Coat will become a part of the American lifestyle; that when a coat is no longer needed, people will think of us and donate it; that donors will be warmed by the knowledge that their coats will go directly to children, women and men in need.
We invite YOU to work with us to make this dream a reality!

(19,964 posts)They're already so strapped I don't think any of them have seen a new coat. The biggest problem seems to be finding coats for kids. You know how kids grow so fast and if you're poor, you can't afford another round of coats every winter or even every several winters.
Of course, we can't forget our homeless citizens and youth. There are so many in need and with winter coming on I always worry.

Thank you theHandpuppet, wish I had a coat to spare.

(19,964 posts)Even if but one person who sees your flyer makes a donation, that will be one less person who will suffer from the cold.

(19,964 posts)If everyone at DU would do likewise, just think of how many coats we could provide!

(11,794 posts)You'd think there would be a coat drive. There isn't for this organization, but maybe there's another.
Thanks for bringing awareness. We're supposed to have a rough winter.

(19,964 posts)I was disappointed to see there was no donation drive listed. I'm going to see if I can't get one going myself. God knows in my neighborhood, some of the "coats" the kids wear in the wintertime are enough to make you cry.
Callmecrazy
(3,065 posts)but I live in S. Florida. I haven't owned more than a hoodie for about five years and I wear it for about a week each winter.

(113,302 posts)churches had racks of coats, scarves, etc. outside--free to any who needed. they also invited people to donate on the spot--it was quite something to see.

(19,964 posts)One thing I do, which I suspect a lot of people would think is dumb and some of my neighbors think I'm nuts -- is that whenever I see trees being trimmed I ask the tree folks for the wood. Sometimes they even cut it up for me into fireplace-sized logs and some I cut myself. I cure the wood in a shed and give it away to people who need it, since quite a few folks around here depend on wood for heat. I gave away quite a stash this year and have another curing in the shed. It doesn't cost me anything but folks are surely grateful to get it.

(19,964 posts)My own mother passed away a little over a year ago and we found she had stashed a rack of nice coats, some with the tags still on them. They all found good homes.

(53,661 posts)They don't have enough money to shop in stores, but the high quality of every kind of clothing shows the caring nature of the people here. They have little jobs they do, then 'buy' clothes at their little 'store' for a piece of change. It gives them a sense of pride and they feel a sense of belonging like everyone else.
The staff also spend their money on them for items that have to come from a regular store or a thrift store. But I love the chance to see my clothes enjoyed by the womean and girls there.
We have so many thrift stores with good things in our area, I haven't bought anything new except for underwear for years.
Private donations and state money care for the elderly, poor and disabled in our neighborhood. We have systems of food, rent, utility assistance, jobs, transportation, all of that. We also have a good state minimum wage, so many don't need this.
But it is there to lend a hand when it's needed. I see a lot of people getting help every week, from all walks of life, but mostly the disabled people of all ages, so I feel blessed to be living here.

The New York Cares Coat Drive works hand-in-hand with a wide variety of individuals, corporations, and nonprofit partners to ensure thousands of coats are collected and distributed as quickly as possible to New Yorkers in need. For 25 years, this powerful team has distributed more than 1.6 million coats, providing an immense impact on the lives of fellow residents.
Will you join that team in 2014? Last year, while collecting nearly 80,000 coats, we still weren't able to fulfill all the requests from our partners. Please read below on what you can do so we don't let anyone go cold this winter. If you have any questions, please email Katherine.Kienitz@newyorkcares.org.

(39,215 posts)this is too early for snow. This is a very good idea. I do not have a really warm coat but I stay indoors most of the time. Hopefully not only will everyone get a good coat but that the homeless will find warm shelter.
