It's almost certainly the students even though authorities won't confirm yet. Arrested police provided the information about where the bodies were buried.
A mass grave has been found on the outskirts of the Mexican town of Iguala, where 43 students went missing on 27 September, officials say.
It is not clear whether the bodies found in a pit are those of the missing students, who were last seen being forced into police vans.
The group had travelled to the area, in the state of Guerrero, to take part in a protest over teachers' rights.
Police opened fire on their buses, killing six people.
Twenty-two police officers are being held in connection with the shooting.
Witnesses said the most of the survivors - all trainee teachers - were bundled into police vans before disappearing.

this is so disturbing and I don't really understand why either police or gangs would do this.

(16,813 posts)where they are has become intolerable, but the ideal solution would be for the people with corrupt, evil governments to overthrow those governments and build better countries. What would it take for the good people of Mexico to stand up against their corrupt systems and change things there?
I know it would be hard. It's hard enough for us to fix the problems with our own government, and the situation here doesn't even compare to Mexico. But why is it that so many give up on Mexico and choose to flee rather than stay and fight for a better country? Could the good people here assist them in any way?
All I know is that allowing large numbers of immigrants here is a temporary solution to this ongoing problem. We can't go on like this forever.

(16,813 posts)The people who want a better country would have to be armed. We've been there and done that in Central and South America and we've gotten nothing but blowback from it, so I suppose we'll just have to wait and let them work it out themselves. I hate to see such suffering, but 'helping' can often make things even worse.

If these officers are the murderers, they are likely to be typical strongly authoritarian conservatives, the kind of guys who angrily shoot down demonstrating students in the U.S. for the crime of not being properly obedient to authority. Or the same general type, but just following orders, unhappily perhaps but dutifully.
