She was diagnosed with lymphoma a few weeks ago. Despite her doing better over the last few days, she finally broke one of her legs today. The lymph nodes around her body have swollen dramatically, and she's been fighting for breath.
So we're finally going to take her in in the morning and end her suffering.
I don't want sympathy, even though I'm eternally grateful for all of the wishes DUers have expressed about the situation. All I'd ask is that those of you with pets give them a big damn hug tonight, and unless they're on some sort of diet, just spoil them for a day or so. Remember they won't be with you forever, and despite all the times they might piss you off or act like stinkers, they're still your babies.
Daisy lived a long, happy life. She's 14. She loved everyone, including the cats that didn't much care for her; that's the one thing above all I've learned from her.
ETA: She went peacefully. Sedative put her to sleep, and the injection ended it in less than a minute. Good night, Daisy.

(495 posts)Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I'm in the countdown phase for a blind 21 year old cat with renal disease. As soon as she tells me it hurts, off she'll go.
She's my last kitty. It will be very lonely without the thunder of four feet followed by a smash.
Hug Daisy with all your might tonight. We want them to live forever. We just don't want them to live forever in pain.

We lost our 14-year old dog several months ago, and made the same humane, but difficult choice you're facing. Tomorrow is going to be hard, but it helped us to sit with the vet and reminisce about our guy. I can never thank her enough for being willing to do that.

(10 posts)It's so hard to let them go even when you know it's the right thing to do. I took my 15 year old girl last Sunday and it hurts. The family came over to say goodby and since her appetite for human food was still good, she got lots of treats. They always break your heart in the end but they're so worth it.

(10,021 posts)until we get to join them. Give Daisy a kiss for me. When I had to put Spencer down I cried from August until October & couldn't stand it anymore so I went to the animal shelter & adopted the cutest little dog. Missy wasn't meant to replace Spencer, but she sure helped me through a very difficult & dark stage of my life. My heart goes out to you & Daisy.

This tears me up. I whispered into my boy Lance's ear as he died in my arms last May. He had been deaf for years, but I wished him sweet dreams, where he felt no pain, he could hear everything, there was lots to eat and his Daddy would love him forever.....dammit, it hurt to love these little guys. But I can't help it.
Why oh why couldn't they live as long as we do? If you have human kids, at least they outlive you.
Peace and comfort to you, NuclearDem. Daisy loves you.

(959 posts)Having gone through this so many times over my six decades, my bottom line is no suffering; as long as life is more good than bad you hang on. But no suffering. A couple of times the decision was made for me; a couple of times I had to make it for the dog. Either way it's very, very hard. But you had your girl for a long time, and as you stated, she had a good life and was loved. How lucky for all of you/

(2 posts)Where To Bury A Dog
There are various places within which a dog may be buried. We are thinking now of a setter, whose coat was flame in the sunshine, and who, so far as we are aware, never entertained a mean or an unworthy thought. This setter is buried beneath a cherry tree, under four feet of garden loam, and at its proper season the cherry strews petals on the green lawn of his grave. Beneath a cherry tree, or an apple, or any flowering shrub of the garden, is an excellent place to bury a good dog. Beneath such trees, such shrubs, he slept in the drowsy summer, or gnawed at a flavorous bone, or lifted head to challenge some strange intruder. These are good places, in life or in death. Yet it is a small matter, and it touches sentiment more than anything else.
For if the dog be well remembered, if sometimes he leaps through your dreams actual as in life, eyes kindling, questing, asking, laughing, begging, it matters not at all where that dog sleeps at long and at last. On a hill where the wind is unrebuked and the trees are roaring, or beside a stream he knew in puppyhood, or somewhere in the flatness of a pasture land, where most exhilarating cattle graze. It is all one to the dog, and all one to you, and nothing is gained, and nothing lost -- if memory lives. But there is one best place to bury a dog. One place that is best of all.
If you bury him in this spot, the secret of which you must already have, he will come to you when you call -- come to you over the grim, dim frontiers of death, and down the well-remembered path, and to your side again. And though you call a dozen living dogs to heel they should not growl at him, nor resent his coming, for he is yours and he belongs there.
People may scoff at you, who see no lightest blade of grass bent by his footfall, who hear no whimper pitched too fine for mere audition, people who may never really have had a dog. Smile at them then, for you shall know something that is hidden from them, and which is well worth the knowing.
The one best place to bury a good dog is in the heart of his master.

(460 posts)Any dog who lives to the age of 14, and spends that time with loving caring people is indeed lucky. She was fortunate enough to be cared for by people who were willing to give her the last gift that a good pet can get. A peaceful death with her master close. She will always live in your heart.
You were fortunate to have had a dog like her, and she was fortunate to have a caring master like you. I wish you both peace.

(21,046 posts)I petted my beautiful black and white kitty Figaro today while he was resting. He flicked his tail to show he was happy. I am the person he owns and I am completely surprised to be owned by a cat after being a dog person for decades.
He is still young. He's three and a half. I hope he lives a long happy life. He's mostly outdoors and has two acres to roam on.
He doesn't talk much, and he doesn't walk on me. He likes to sit a couple of feet away from me and be companionable.

(356 posts)came to us at age 3 1/2 and lived to 16 1/2. He developed cancer in his snout and there wasn't anything we could do for him so the dreadful decision was made. I held him in my arms on his back and kissed his little nose while our eyes were fixed on each others. I whispered how much I loved him and hoped he would somehow come back to us. At his last breath I felt his body go limp and the vet allowed my wife and I some time alone with him at which time we wrapped him in his favorite blanket. When the assistant came back with a small box she was crying. The vet knew Toto for around 8 yrs. We brought him home and buried him in his fav spot in the back yard.
Losing a furbaby is traumatic and I sympathize with you and your families loss.

(1,397 posts)We had to euthanize one of our cats a few years ago. He was just an old stray without a pedigree who wandered in one day and stayed but he was everyone's friend. After 12 years, his picture is still on the bookshelf and I never sanded down the place where he liked to scratch on one of the back porch columns.
Daisy really is better off -- you did the right thing.

(36,392 posts)We recently lost our terrier. She'd been declining but only had one bad day. I'd decided to take her the next morning. She did me one last solid that night - barked to go out, wandered down to her favorite sun bathing spot, laid down, and died. Saved me the agony of taking her in.

(81,265 posts)God this is one of the hardest things about having critters around in your life.
I wish we could relieve human suffering at the end of life the way we're allowed to with the animals we love. Surely the humans and elders we love deserve the same gentle, painless passage.
Sounds like Daisy was loved to the very last moment - and still at THIS moment.
Lot of us with you, NuclearDem. You do not mourn alone.
