I am sorry but I am angry and please forgive me for any ill formed thoughts but I need to vent.
I have been watching various news stories this weekend and I am sick and angry of my fellow American citizens.
First off I figure Republicans BUT to see Democratic members of congress even suggesting our "borders are closed" and "Travel bans" to West Africa because of one case that got to America. EXCUSE ME! me have some of the best doctors in the world and a lot of them are working on the Ebola and by banning Travel you in a sense prevent the treatment of this terrible illness. Not to mention getting supplies to those countries is really going to make America the greatest and best protected nation in the world!
I am sick and tired of the media not fully educating the American Public and just trying to get ratings. Edward R. Marrow is probably flipping in his grave with the way TRUE news has been given away to ratings grabbing fear mongering.
AND while we are on the subject. Let's talk about ISIS/ISIL and the middle east in general and the way the media never bother to give the American public a understanding of the complex history and issues of the middle eastern culture today which lead to Bill Mahar's stupid and narrow-minded statements on his show Friday night.
Okay Bill you are an Atheist. I can respect your an atheist BUT to make the comments that you did make is no different than some of the stupid comments you have railed against.
FIRST OFF to put a blanket comment about muslims is like someone making a blanket comment of all Christians for some radicals we have. It is no different than a blanketed view of all Americans because of some of the ill decisions our government has made OR because a couple loud mouth Americans misbehaved in Europe doesn't mean we are all going to act that way.
For someone who in general is smart those comments made on the show Friday night just showed bad form.
Like the beginning of the Newsroom's first episode said: "America isn't the Greatest country in the world...it use to be..."
We are so eager to "wage war" on everything EVERYTHING! but that mentality doesn't do anything but cause destruction.
Instead of "waging a war.." on ebola or hunger or poverty or pollution... We wage a campaign of education and compassion and WAGE A CAMPAIGN OF HEALING!!
We can be so much better.
Yes, my wife has influence a lot of my thinking...and I remember her asking one time. America was born out of blood fight for independence... could a country born from such a bloody pass push that war and fighting out of our collective national mentality and ever embrace education or nurturing as a nation or will we always have the war mentality?
Again:
War on Poverty
War on Drugs
War on Cancer....

(29,067 posts)No? Then how about not insulting the rest of us?
Try "Some of America is stupid", maybe even " A big part of America is Stupid,
at least at present". But don't put down the whole country, bro, after all, you
might remember that you ARE on this American board, so apparently you don't
find us stupid. Just a thought

(25,348 posts)It is...in several ways. The US is better in several ways. My point being: It really depends on who you are and what you want.
Some problems with countries can be solved fairly easy.
Take the US: Raise the minimum wage to a decent amount...not to hard.
Fix Australia's high housing costs...pretty hard to do.
Trying to say which one is better depends on the year and who is in charge.
I could live in either country but it's a very hard choice. I love them both.

(7,820 posts)We're basically a teenager. No sense of history, little long term vision, idealistic in some ways and *everything* is a hair-on-fire crisis (and yeah, some things should be, but as a whole we don't have a good sense for what really does matter) Huge potential if we ever grow the fuck up, but huge potential land mines in our path as well. Also, we're absolutely sure we've got it all figured out.

(45,319 posts)A Mr David Hannum. The point being that Barnum's popularity hinged upon plentiful suckers and was not an indication of quality. What we can learn from this is that the Hannum Type still exists, folks who rail against their neighbors and call them rubes and suckers and idiots. We can also learn that all that venom did not buy Hannum even enough fame to be credited with his own most famous line, Barnum gets the credit. Hannum was the sucker after all.

I don't think America as a whole is "stupid", but certainly a large percentage of the population does not take time to become well-informed. Just watching cable news is insufficient and those who get a steady diet of faux news are the most poorly informed.
I appreciate your idea to "wage a campaign of education and compassion and WAGE A CAMPAIGN OF HEALING!! " I often wonder why there is always money for the military but other institutions are chronically under-funded. Doesn't seem to matter who is in office, that never seems to change.

(3,121 posts)and politician's who 1- take advantage of people being dumb and 2 for not using there office to change it.
I live in a "RED NECK" area of Pennsylvania... I have heard stupid and racist comments some from my own family.
maybe I am too negative right now but I find too many people who are stupid/ignorant/narrow-minded/looking through rose-color glasses...we need America to wake up.

What's "stupid" is judging the entire country by your dumbass corner of it.

(45,319 posts)Are you even aware of the fact that for 20 fully pointless year, you allowed your nation to ban entry to anyone with HIV virus? That's right. It was enforced with full bigoted ignorance until 2010. Thousands of people were prevented from seeing family, attending weddings, graduations, they were denied the ability to work in the US and of course they could not seek treatment here.
All of this went on for two full decades without a single, solitary word from most straight Americans. I ask the OP, did you or your family ever once rail at the stupidity of this long term discrimination? In 20 years, did you ever write even one letter or make a solitary phone call about this injustice?
If your answer is no and we can assume that it is, the next question becomes why. Why did you not take action?
29 US States allow open, full stated discrimination against LGBT people in housing and in employment. Do you ever get your dander up over that?

(3,121 posts)about. YES, I am upset by that stupidity so forgive me for not MENTIONING EVERYTHING! Those two that I did mention have been in the news and topics of most recent talks.
