With crisp weather and pumpkin-spiced-everything, October is a wonderful time of year. But for millions of animals nationwide, it's no time to celebrate.

Nearly 4 million dogs in the United States enter animal shelters annually, and up to 40% never find a home. It's a staggering number, and it is a sobering reminder that our nation's pet homelessness problem is very real and very tragic. It's also why, amidst the falling leaves and cozy sweaters, it is so important to remember that October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month.
