International donors have pledged billions of pounds towards reconstruction efforts in Gaza, almost two months after the Palestinian territory was bombarded by a seven week-Israeli attack.
The Palestinian Authority has been promised $5.4bn to rebuild areas turned to rubble in fighting between Hamas and Israel this summer, according to Boerge Brende, Norway's foreign minister.
Clashes and air strikes in the region killed more than 2,100 Palestinians, most of them civilians, 67 Israeli soldiers and six civilians inside Israel. The group had originally requested $4bn to fund reconstruction.
The British government pledged to more than double the amount of money it has donated to reconstruction efforts, offering an additional £20 million to the £17 million already spent since the conflict concluded.
The funds will go towards disposal of unexploded ordnance, rubble clearance programmes and reconstructive surgery for those injured in the fighting.
Their announcement came at an conference held to atttract government donations, during which Qatar said it would be adding $1 billion to the fund and US Secretary of State John Kerry promised a further $212 million.

What could possibly go wrong.

(2,219 posts)A lot more precision than those 6000 quassams and rockets lobed at Israeli civilians.
One day, the people of gaza will throw Hamas out and get on with their lives.

When is Israel going to make peace with the Palestinians? Seriously. I see no sign whatsoever that Israel wants to actually reach a fair, negotiated settlement. It just wants the status quo. Where's the two-state solution? Netanyahu is not interested.
If you want to continue to colonize and oppress a nation, don't expect them to smile and throw bouquets.

(2,219 posts)You know there is really no difference between ISIS and Hamas.
I proved it to you.
Sooner or later you will reconcile the two.

(50,414 posts)as opposed to the number massacred by the Israeli precision bombing?
Hopefully, some day, Hamas will be thrown out, a Palestinian State will exist, and Netanyahu and his fellow criminals will be thrown out and the people of Israel can get on with their lives.

(7,321 posts)we'll see how much actually gets sent. If these pledges are sincere, I agree it's an important step.
On the other hand, there is the matter of pledge, rebuild, bomb over and over again, and who profits?
None the less, I'll hold out for hope that this is a genuine pledge.
