(72,790 posts)Translation: Pitbulls. We know Pitbulls are the only dogs that attack. The DU told me so.

(40,372 posts)Love Chihuahuas. I have one.
Sweetest thing you'll ever meet, but some can be vicious.

(52,459 posts)we were in a pretty nice, quiet, suburban neighborhood with rather little crime, yet almost all of them had the "dogs are for protection" attitude.
chihuahuas nip; they're not as likely to tear your ass cheek of (as one doberman did to the paperboy) or maul your arm (as a german shepherd did to a neighborhood kid) but they can still draw blood, and they did.

(30,947 posts)But let a stranger come into the house and she changes into a miniature pit bull. She is one of those that can be vicious.

(5,946 posts)you can step on them like a hoard of cockroaches. Not to mention an angry beagle ran in my back yard once and I had my hands full and had to avoid it. sheesh. Dogs, not pit bulls. I figure my next dog will be a beagle for protection!

(52,459 posts)ok, kidding. but i understand why people aren't as fearful of the flu, i mean, it sounds like it's in the past tense, so we no longer have to worry.

(51,666 posts)use our education and expertise to be part of the solution and NOT part of the problem are ALSO being mocked and called fearmongers. Right here on DU.
Voice for Peace
(13,141 posts)There's a fine line between helping people be informed,
and helping people be terrified. That kind of fear is not
helpful, it paralyzes and blocks clarity.
Any humor associated with Ebola has been for that purpose,
ie to dispel irrational fear. Not to make light of it, nor
ridicule people for disseminating useful information.
If you are feeling frustrated, maybe you are trying too
hard to make people be more alarmed. On DU I think
most everyone is well-informed about the situation.
Informed enough that it is scary all by itself, without
any additional fear-inducing input. If you have some
information that's not available elsewhere, that's helpful.
I've got a daughter who just came back from Africa.
It's easy to become scared. It's important not to
stay scared.

(8,492 posts)...all of these things still have, to this day, smart people who know their shit working to make things safer.
Just like there are smart people who know their shit working around the clock, missing their families, not sleeping, eating out of vending machines...trying to find a cure or prevention for Ebola.
Am I happy about the thousands that have died and will die? Nope. Am I skipping through the streets without a care in the world? Nope. But, I'm going to remain optimistic that those smart people are doing their damnedest to figure this out and will, at the very least, make it less of a global threat.

(32,324 posts)Hemachromatosis only affects one in every two hundred people, but it is genetic - meaning that among those who are afflicted with the syndrome, both they and quite a few of the family members suffer from many terrible situations for their lifetimes, until they die early on from heart attacks. (If your family has had several members die of heart attacks before age forty, or if women in the family have early onset of menopause as early as twenty five or so, it might be worth looking into.) The suffering is needless, as simply donating blood enables the person to be affliction -free!
Rarely tested for. And doctors often miss it. My mother-in-law lost four of five of her brothers and not until the fifth brother started exhibiting some symptoms did it finally come to the family's attention.
Hepatitis is at epidemic proportions, and only in the last few years have there been efforts to screen for it, whenever anyone claims to feel run down etc.

(15,882 posts)About 4 from fireworks, Far and away more with slips, falls, drowning, etc. CDC data as well as others is quite clear.
The major point is true enough, it would seem, without mistakenly adding in other things from the person's existing bias. Makes the rest of it seem less reliable.
A great example of the misuse of data, however. The bars are completely out of scale, except for the scale of the agenda of the cartoonist.
