General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI went to my local urgent care today, the first question they asked
was about travel history. Specifically about travel to or contacts with anyone traveling from W. Africa. The intake nurse asked twice. I thanked her for doing so.
I was encouraged by this. I hope it's a standard question being asked of every patient in every heathcare setting in every city in the US.

(41 posts)When they hospitalized me in our small local hospital here in Backwater Missouristan, that was one of the first questions they asked me. I'm glad they're taking the threat seriously.

(8,303 posts)Small clinics seem to have reacted first.
But if it ever really got off the ground, we'd have to close for all infectious disease. You couldn't even do a throat swab safely. It's a very intimidating disease because it is transmission-selective for health-care settings. It's a very terrifying prospect, so we'd better not let it get off the ground.

(35,773 posts)Asking the question at the end of an interview might be worthy, but from a risk assessment standpoint, that clinic is not focused on what will actually help most of the patients it sees.
UGH!

(3,208 posts)We took my husband to a UC because he had a high fever for two-three days after we had come back from a road trip to New Mexico and through Colorado. He had no other symptoms except wanting to sleep, which is why we took him. I mentioned our travel history to everyone who came in the room and they looked at me like I was nuts.

I blame Obama for this. This clinic opened the day the ACA exchanges opened.

(11,914 posts)We were in a few weeks ago, before the US ebola issues had started, and they were already asking. I very much appreciated that. And it wasn't only the intake nurse. It was everyone we came in contact with -- name, birthdate, have you recently traveled to or been in contact with people who have recently traveled to South Africa, the Middle East (can't remember the specific country they asked about), etc.
