I have a question concerning a new requirement my job is requiring.

they are instituting a navy style PT test.
1.5 mile run pushups and sit ups ,
different requirements for males and females
and different requirements for different ages.
requirements being the time allotment for the run
and the number of pushups and sit ups required.
is this legal ? I know the military can get away
with different requirements based on sex and age
but a private company. I would think that people
doing the same job, getting the same pay, would
be required to have the same requirements.

anyone have any idea if this is legal or not.

I know some Parcel companies require an amount of lbs a person can carry.

I really have no idea however.

4. I think they can based on a "fitness" standard.

Fitness standards can vary between genders and ages.

It's hard to argue that a level of fitness is not a reasonable requirement for such a job.

I'm not sure at all.
Thanks for replying. I was really curious what requires such a standard.

Get back to me in about 25 years.

The standards are different because we're built differently.

If we all had to pass the test handed to 20 year old males, the only people they'd have left would be 20 year old males and that is unfair.

3. I second that question - what kind of job requires this type of fitness?

I think one reason the military has gender specific standards is that certain jobs are reserved for males. As far as i know, females who want combat roles must meet the same standards as males.

9. What is "fit" for a 25 year old isn't the same as for a 50 year old.

If they are making sure you are "fit" then it would vary by age. Or by sex (i.e. a very fit woman might not be able to lift as many pounds as a man but she is fit for her age/sex).

everyone paid the same
everyone has the same job description
everyone has to do the same weapons qual.
everyone should have to meet the same PT standards.

I had a job where I had to be able to lift 80 lbs.

Either you could lift it or you couldnt. It doesnt matter if person A could lift 120. The requirement was still 80.

He seems to have his finger on all things corporate.

Otherwise, a brief phone call to a lawyer might prove interesting.

13. It sounds more to me that they are trying to be accommodating, not exclusionary.

There are people with limitations or due to age or height or build, might be more or less capable than others.

This seems to be an attempt to establish not just one minimum standard but several so that candidates aren't unfairly excluded.

I do see your point, however, and my first reaction is that it should be one standard, but as an older person with a lot to offer but less in the way of physical strength, I kind of respect that they're thinking about the fact that people come in different shapes and sizes.

Naturally, the line of work matters. Firefighters, for example, need to be more fit than freight handlers, who need to be more fit than accountants.

they probably can demand it. Look upon it as doing your regular workout on their time and getting paid for it.

17. They are testing your physical fitness not whether you can do the job.

The number of pushups or how fast you run will probably never be a factor for your job however it can show your overall fitness for your sex and age which is why your company is doing this.
