General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsSo is the Ebola frenzy over now?
Is there anyone left in the US that is sick?
The hospitals and medical staff are getting a handle on how to take care of these people?
Obama is not going to impose martial law, the true believers are not going to guillotined, paper money is not going to all be burned up? FEMA is not going to put all the possibly sick people into concentration camps?
This is a huge relief.

My poor Bible Believing Baptist friends are going to be so disappointed that none of this worked out the way they thought it was going to.
I think they are going to take off on immigration stuff now. Drudge is really fanning the flames over there on how we are going to be flooded with immigrants.

Over 100 still being watched in Dallas an Ohio. No new cases so far. CDC has issued new PPE guidelines and normal hospitals will no longer be treating future ebola patient but they will be transfered to BSL 4 facilities. NBC photographer will be released soon from Nebraska facility.
I think that about sums it up for now.

(25,171 posts)Two people who arrived at O'Hare International Airport from Liberia have been placed under observation at Chicago hospitals, under the city's procedures for handling Ebola, after they fell ill during their flights, officials said.
Health officials stressed that "at this time there have been no confirmed cases of Ebola and there is no threat to the general public."
In fact, the officials said they decided against testing the two for Ebola after initial medical evaluations but did send them to Lurie Children's Hospital and Rush University Medical Center for observation. They are being kept in isolation.
The two hospitals are among four in Chicago that have agreed to take Ebola patients from other hospitals and health care providers should any cases appear in the area. The others are Northwestern Memorial Hospital and the University of Chicago Medical Center.

(9,766 posts)International Traveler Held At Newark Hospital After Possible Ebola Exposure
October 21, 2014 9:20 PM
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) A passenger was being evaluated at a hospital in Newark Tuesday, after reportedly being identified as possibly having been exposed to the Ebola virus.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention spokeswoman Carol Crawford said the passenger was identified as reporting symptoms or having a potential exposure to Ebola during the enhanced screening process for those arriving in the U.S. from Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea in West Africa.
The passenger was hospitalized for evaluation, and the CDC will contact others on the aircraft to determine whether they were put at risk, the CDC said.
The Record reported that the passenger had been on a flight from Liberia that went through Brussels before arriving at Newark Liberty International Airport Tuesday afternoon. The passenger was held briefly at customs at Terminal C at the airport and was then sequestered from the other passengers from the flight, the newspaper reported.

17 Texas Kindergarteners Contract Ebola After Exposure To Liberian Foreign Exchange Student
Posted about 2 days ago | 112 comments
BREAKING NEWS The unused wing of a retirement community in Wortham, Texas was transformed into a makeshift Ebola ward early this morning after 17 kindergarten students fell violently ill and tested positive for the Ebola virus. It is believed that the children were exposed to the deadly disease after sharing classrooms with a Liberian foreign exchange student. The girl had recently arrived in the states to spend a year with an American family after her own parents were displaced by war. She began vomiting excessively two week after her arrival and tested positive for Ebola shortly before the other children began displaying symptoms themselves.
Lindsay Belknap is a substitute teacher who was working with the children during the time in which they are believed to have became infected. She is currently under observation at an undisclosed local hospital. National Report was able to speak with Lindsay for a short phone interview where she had the following to say.
It was like a domino effect. First one child, then two, then 3. Pretty soon nearly all of them were sick. I am scared because as you know, children smear their germs all over everything. I am constantly sanitizing surfaces, wiping faces and hands. Who knows how many people have become infected. Its tragic and its a reality.
<snip>
23 specially trained medical staff members have been brought in from neighboring states to tend the children; A daunting task, mainly due to the measures they must take in order to avoid getting infected with Ebola themselves. Many emerge exhausted after administering care for several hours while wearing a bulky hazmat suit. Despite inquiries made in regard to the current heath status of the youths, medical staff refused to disclose any information on their condition.

The Obama administration has apparently handled the situation in the US with prudence and wisdom.

(14,733 posts)the most important people working at hospitals are not the doctors or nurses, but the cleaning staff. They deserve better pay and more respect, because they're the ones who do the most to keep hospital-acquired infections down.

(22,651 posts)Then we have the 21 day wait for their medical team. If not for the whistle blower nurses and the Duncan families care of Mr. Duncan (while he was sick& not in hospital), could have been much worse.
I worry about our military who help to set-up treatment centers in Africa. They need more treatment centers, our military will do a good job.
Our Gov. set-up camps for civies the reservations & Japanese internment camps.
If we had a serious outbreak it would be our military ordered by our Federal Gov. to set-up USA treatment centers. Similar to the African treatment centers.

(111,312 posts)since we're in the last few days before the midterms and it looks like Ebola is a dud when it comes to a massive national epidemic that will kill working people but spare the rich.
I welcome the relief and I hope the two nurses down with it are recovering. Last I looked, they were listed as stable, which means whatever they're doing is working.
It's just too bad West Africa has dropped off the media radar. The disease is spreading there and shows no sign of slowing down. The good news is that the vaccine in limited human trials hasn't made anyone sick. The bad news is that it's at least 2 years from being produced in sufficient quantities for people in Africa and we don't know if it protects people fully from Ebola-Zaire yet.
Unfortunately, the media will soon be on to the Next Shiny Scare Tactic. Republicans will shriek about all the election fraud they commit and want to blame on Democrats because how dare all those blacks, Hispanics and damned women vote? It's not in the constitution!

(25,183 posts)Look at what happened in NJ today.
Someone was suspected of having Ebola who landed at Newark Liberty airport, and while you may not know it, the local news media was filled with the story, even Gov. Chris Crispy Creme on the TV for a long time talking about it.
The current policy of "let them fly here, we'll figure out later if they have Ebola" virtually guarantees that there will be horror stories of this for at least until the election. If only the President had said a month ago, "If you are from West Africa, your tourist visa is null and void until I say differently" then we wouldn't have had Duncan or any of the other stuff about this, it would have been something that stayed 'over there'.
Please remember, the basic philosophy of the mushy middle voter that too often decides our election outcomes is "keep yer diseases overseases".

(17,656 posts)They have dozens of scams going on right now on the internet from websites selling Ebola "medical" kits to prevent you from getting it, if you use their product, of course.
Some other internet websites have even advertised that they are selling a "cure" for Ebola through their exclusive (fake) offer!
The local news station here did a report on it tonight.
At first I thought, well, yeah, of course, lowlifes are going to take advantage of all of the fear that has been spread when the news of Ebola in the United States was blown clear out of proportion by a lot of Republicans who were only looking to score political points with the public.
But then, I began to feel sick to my stomach when I realized it wasn't just some of those Republicans.
I got queasy even thinking that scumbags would capitalize on the mainstream media's current obsession, constantly reporting poorly written news stories that were causing quite a few people to panic after they were whipped in to a frenzy by all of the hoopla for over a week.
We really need to strive to protect the integrity of the internet from ever becoming as sleazy as the people who own and control the mainstream media outlets.

(6,342 posts)If, as the former correctional officer fears, the virus spreads to hundreds of people, Griffin is headed to the woods.
"I'll do what the English royalty did to survive the bubonic plague," Griffin said, referring to King Charles II's flight to the countryside during the Great Plague of London in 1665-66. "I'm going into the country."
Griffin, 27, of Huntsville, Texas, is among a growing if loosely-defined segment of Americans, known as "preppers," who plan, train and stockpile in preparation for a natural calamity or societal breakdown.
For many, the three cases of Ebola diagnosed in the United States so far since late September represent a new potential disaster and a reason to run to the store.
